Need help clarifying an explanation

As most of your friends probably do, mine ask why I only focus on gun laws when I talk about politics. You guys know like I do that gun laws are an indicator of other things like:
government respect of god-given rights
government respect of the bill of rights
etc.

I am not good at explaining this to non-gun people. Could one of you write a better one than the one above?

There are only two important issues!

#1: Taxes- If we don't hand over so much money to the government, they cannot do all that much to screw up the country, and

#2: Guns- At the end of the day, all laws, whether just or unjust, are enforced through the threat of or infliction of violence (see U.S. Foreign Policy)

All of the other issues (abortion, gay marriage, prescription drug benefits, welfare, etc.) are truly insignificant compared to the issues of taxes and guns, since the enactment and enforcement of all of the others stems from these two.

Also, ask your friends what the Second Amendment sought to protect us from. They, for the most part, would probably say, "From the criminals" or "From each other." To realize that the Second Amendment was actually put in place to give us the means by which to protect us from our own government is an idea most "educated" people cannot fathom.

These are the same people that believe guns are primarily for "sporting purposes" or "hunting". Guns are for protecting life and liberty. I realize that an AR-15 is not a "sporting" weapon. It is a weapon designed to protect my freedom from those enemies, both foreign AND DOMESTIC, who would seek to enslave me. The sports are just benign ways to keep my skills up! ;)

So much for education these days.

Speak for yourself!

"I realize that an AR-15 is not a "sporting" weapon."

Really? Then I guess you don't realize that:

1. AR-15's are now THE most common rifle at Camp Perry;

2. AR-15's are THE most common rifle at UPSPS 3-gun matches; and

3. "Sporting" is utterly irrelevant in any discussion of firearms rights.

But hey, I'm sure the anti's will love your assertion.

government respect of the bill of rights
Actually, I don't buy this. The same attorney general that has recently said some rather pro-gun things is also in favor of locking up US citizens without due process.

Same thing with some of the Christian Coalition noise. Not a group that is really in favor of guaranteeing the rights of non-Christians, but are also pro-gun.

Seems like the bill of rights is kind of in the eye of the beholder. I'd be an ACLU member if it wasn't for the fact that they are equally "selective" in interpretting/supporting the Bill of Rights.

The only people that seem to want to support ALL your rights don't get elected, or allowed into nationally televised debates.

Gun ownership by the people is the mine canary in our republic. It is the most reliable way to predict whether we remain somewhat free or are destined to become enslaved. An honest, benevolent government has nothing to fear from an honest, armed citizen. The fact that some quarters of our government do fear us, apparently, is the best argument I could make for the absolutely essential necessity of STAYING ARMED!

In response. . .

Number 6-

Of course I realize that AR-15s are used in competition, but I was referring to their original purpose, and not their eventual use. I believe that any weapon can have a sport created for it in order to develop one's skills. However, I do not believe that firearms were invented out of the necessity of sporting leisure, but rather for the inherent need to defend one's life, liberty, and property.

FrankDrebin-

From what part of left field did "corporate tax law" come? Maybe I am just misreading your rather enigmatic post. Please explain more fully that we may come to have your insights.

Handy-

I agree that politicians are exactly that- Politicians.

I have to agree with Vangaurd. I doubt the first person to make a firearm did it so we could see who could get the smallest group of holes on paper. Number 6 I do see your point that they have a sporting application.

Vanguard, Frank Drebin's response about Corporate Tax Law was in response to the original question in this thread, he was not responding to you.

Original question "what do I say when friends ask why I only talk about gun law".

Thanks for the explanation on Handy's response.

Sorry about that. I was having a senior moment (and I'm not even a "senior" yet!).
