Need help choosing a CZ 452

I decided I want a nice looking .22LR for general shooting, perhaps some small game use. I want to keep it open sights.

I used to shoot .22lr open sight competition, and I don't really want to compete again... but I just would like to spend more time with a nice looking .22Lr open sight rifle.

Here is my problem... I LOVE Mannlicher style rifles. In fact I USED to own a CZ 452 FS in .17HMR. I sadly sold it... but am considering another for .22lr just for the fact I love they way they look and feel.

At the shop I work at we have a 452 Trainer rifle... which is nice... and feels like a handy little .22lr rifle. However... I have been drooling over its bigger brother the 452 Ultra Lux. Unfortunately I have never seen one of these in person, I am a little nervous that the 28.5'' barrel on it will make it feel cumbersome.

On paper... for what I want... I would say the Ultra Lux would be the better choice.. seeing as it has the longer sight radius.. and adjustable rear sight. However I still love the looks of the classic Mannlicher style.

Price is not an issue... Please share your pictures... and stories.. and opinions. The only thing I worry of the Ultra Lux is the barrel might be too long.:o

I have 452s in FS, LUX and Varmint variants. All are spectacular. I like the FS the most but think the LUX is the better shooter. I prefer the LUX over the Ultra Lux. That barrel is just too long for me.

You will be happy with any of them. They are just great rifles across the line.

I have an Ultra-Lux and a couple CZ trainers with Beechwood stock. The Ultra-Lux is cool if you like open sights. I actually added a peep sight that was made for CZ's to mine. Very fun to shoot. It balances really well even with the long barrel. Nice sight radius. I got mine a while back when they were cheap. Think I paid $179 or something like that. They were overruns for some Arab country or so the story goes... Mine has kind of a reddish orange tint to the stock.
I have also heard that we can finally get the Mannlicher stock version here in the states in .22 might have to add that one to my list. If money is no object get one with nicer wood for the stock. Either the standard version or full stock with the nice hardwood. The beechwood on the Ultra Lux is nothing special and they aren't that cheap anymore. All of them are great shooters though!

I have a 452 Luxe, left hand model. Probably the best value gun I own in terms of dollars spent for quality/workmanship received. Nice stock, clean machining, and very accurate. Stock sights are pretty good too. Great gun for plinking or shooting small game. I don't compete with it, but I imagine you could do ok with it with the right sights in a production class competition.

They are... but I work for a major FFL... and I am dealing with CZ directly... hence price and availability aren't an option.

I put some precise diopter sights on my 28" Ultra Lux. It is not unwieldy at all. Balances very nicely and the stock feels great. If you have never shot .22lr through a barrel that long, it will surprise you. Mine is pellet gun quiet with subsonic target rounds. I am happy with my choice.

Great choice and options !!!

Unfortunately I have never seen one of these in person, I am a little nervous that the 28.5'' barrel on it will make it feel cumbersome.

I also had one of the Ultra-Lux, in .22 and trainers with Beechwood stock. On the bench, it was a tack driver and even more so after doing a little work on the trigger. However, in the woods, it was a bit cumbersome, on hunting squirrels. Sold it with plans on purchasing the American and to date, that hasn't happened. ....

Be Safe !!!

I have the Ultra Lux, and I'm very happy with it. It is pretty quiet even for a rimfire, and the extra sight radius is great. There is a possibility that with some ammo the extra barrel length is actually slowing down the bullet, but I have seen mixed opinions on this. If I had it to do over, I would still get the Ultra Lux because it's got such a great sight radius. Everybody who holds it (except my wife, who has very short arms) loves how it points and balances. I've been toying with getting peep sights for it, but I really can't justify it yet, since it always hits what I point at. Perhaps when I get a chance to do more target practice this fall I'll take the plunge. I think you're getting a great gun whether you go with the long or short barrel... last time I was at the range there were two beautiful standard versions there, and they were tack drivers with scopes mounted.
