Help! A 6.5mm or 6.8mm AR15 Which One Is Right?

OK which way should I turn?

A 6.5 Grendel
Or A .264
Or A 6.8 SPC

I want to have the ability to shoot long and flat with velocity!

 This is new territory for me?

apparently, wolf is coming out with steel cased 6.5mm grendel that may be a bit more than 223 steel in price.

OK Guys It Needs To Be 6.5 Or 6.8 No Other Calibers

OK Guys It Needs To Be 6.5 Or 6.8 No Other Calibers

My Local Gunsmith Range Master 1 says it should be 6.5 or .264.
I'm finding limited choices in the 6.5 so I'm leaning towards the 6.8.
Just looking for some advice from those that are more experienced than I am:)

What do you want to do with it? Shoot long and flat at what? How long is long..? Either caliber is pretty pricey when blasting away with an AR.

Shoot long and flat at what?

Taliban @ 50 to 1000 yards... Joking! Learning to move out in distance at the range I shoot at, out to 1000 yards, as well as hunting cyotes and deer.

Ok well if you can't give serious feedback when we are trying to help you than I guess I won't waste my time.

It's your money to waste... go which ever you want.

Punching holes in paper I would just get a heavy barrel upper capable of stabilizing heavier .223 loads. Or just get an AR-10 in .308:confused:

I am sure Call of Duty will have what your looking for.

Why can't people just take the calibers the OP asked about and give a recommendation on just those without throwing out your own favorite?

The 6.8 SPC is the best of the one you inquired about.....good luck!!

The 6.5 Grendel is the best for long range. It has the ability to remain super sonic past 1300yds with the right barrel and load.

The 6.8 well have slightly more energy out to about 500yds, past that point the 6.5 out performs it(bullet dependent).

Hornady is marketing quality ammo at affordable prices, Wolf Gold is a bargain price and good enough to ring steel past 600yds. The new Wolf steel case well make the 6.5 affordable to shoot as a plinker.

Neither will be much in stock - it's already deer season or just weeks away.

First, can you shoot haji at 1000 yards? If so, then Uncle Sam already gave you a rifle, crew served weapon, or vehicle with or without wings to do it. The silly response goes to your sig line.

What are you REALLY going to do with it, besides blow money to have bragging rights at the range? Cartridges have different ballistic properties, it's entirely the point why different ones are designed.

It's been posted more than once in this thread, and a thousand others, much less the Wiki entrys: 6.8 is a 14.5 to 16" barreled, lethal to live targets design made up by Special Forces and the Army Marksmanship Unit with 40% more power than 5.56. 6.5G is a long distance cartridge designed for 20"+ barrels to excell at 600m and futher in precision range competition.

Can you use either for the other job - yes - sighted in at the same ranges, either will hit the same candy wrapper. They are both limited to feeding thru the restricted mag well of the M16, and both more alike than the fanboys of either like to admit.

Right now, there's about ten 6.8 suppliers of barrels, uppers, and ammo for every one 6.5G/.264LBC. Either way, you can get barrels, bolts, magazines, and ammo online. You will likely NOT find any at Boxmart. Ammo will be commercially priced, it's not a taxpayer supported military surplus round.

What ranges are you shooting at, at what kind of targets? Then choose what fits best.

Well, I have been researching the exact same question for a year now and have querried real shooters experiences as well, primarilly long range results. If I had it to do today I'd go 6.5. Better long range ballistics, probably a slight edge in inherindt accuracy, great/diverse bullet selection. The guys that compete and hunt with it seem to love it.

Blacksky, looking at your posts, its obvious you are well versed in AR-15s and have done a few (at least) builds. So, this thread is rather bizarre.

Since your stated intent is to engage

Taliban @ 50 to 1000 yards...

and your profile lists you as "58" years old and a "sales manager" (ie, NOT military),

and if you really were planning to do this,

Taliban @ 50 to 1000 yards...

our military would issue you something to conduct said activity,

and the fact I am a master of the obvious;),

I am throwing the bovine manure flag.

So, what is it? Are you over enamoured with your "Range Master"'s recommendation, or is this just another 6.8 vs 6.5 battle thread royale in disguise?

Joking about the Taliban!!

Joking about the Taliban!! Learning to move out in distance at the range I shoot at, out to 1000 yards, as well as hunting cyotes and deer. I have all the parts I need to finish this build except the barrel and bolt head. I will be using a 18" - 20" polygonal rifled barrel with these specs. Looking for serious advice. I am leaning towards the 6.8 SPC because of availabilty and cost of parts. I will be using worked up hand loads after the initial build, break in and sighting of the AR.

•Barrel Length: 18" - 20" H-Bar
•Gas System: Mid-Length
•Barrel Material: 416 Stainless Steel
•Barrel Finish: Matte Black
•Rifling: 1:11 Polygonal 3 groove
•M4 feed ramp
•Under handguard: 0.88 inches
•In front of gas block: 0.73 inches
•Threading (TPI): 5/8x24"
•Weight: 2.3lbs

Do some reading on the 6.8 SPC and Grendel forums. If you are serious about accuracy past 600yds the 6.5G is far superior.

AA released the trade mark rights on the Grendel so their well be more barrel makers and more ammo available soon. Plus the Grendel now has a SAAMI spec.

This 7.62 is a very reliable shooter to 800-1000 yds depending on wind.

This 6.5G shoots to 1300yds and well handle more wind.

If you shoot out to 1K more often, you should go 6.5G. If most of your coyote/deer shots are at 400 yds or fewer, then 6.8 will work fine.

As a bad generalization: 6.5 have longer barrels to wring the most "flat and fast" from the platform.
As a counter-bad-generalization, 6.8s run shorter barrels and get the most from their stubbier bullets in the first 400 yards.

I do most of my hunting in heavy woods, so I chose 7.62x39 upper b/c under 200 yards, the 7.62AK is comparable to either, but I did the research on all 3.
