Folks, these are 4 of 7 notorious S&W revolvers purposely mismarked and smuggled out of the factory. They are specifically mentioned in one of Jim Supica's earlier editions.

A Smith Distributor was behind the scheme trying to create his own sub brand. He was terminated along with his inside man.

If those are the complete serial numbers, these are definitely unusual. They should be sold as rare collectables and may be worth thousands each.

Maybe contact a dealer like Fugate Firearms, who handles stuff like this.

I think the OP is merely shortening the serial numbers to save space. But since in some cases the serial number does affect the value, it would be better to include the whole serial number or, if you want, to X out the last one or two, for example, D1234XX.

Of course, if all those guns really are serial number 3, that is quite a collection and should be sold as a collection.

I missed this important detail initially. So what we have here is actually for each series letter, X, we have the third gun of the SN series. Very interesting. For value, $2000 would be a good deal for someone, because the guns should be sold as a package, and if they were just any old serial number, they are worth that. I think many of us missed that they are literally SN "D3" meaning the 3rd revolver made in the D series, which was the prefix for M&Ps after the "C" series was done.

This is of course not necessarily the third gun of each model for each of these individual guns, since many models often share the same SN series. In other words, J3, aka the J series IIRC was shared at least by the model 37, and perhaps some of the other J frame 38 specials such as the model 38, 49, 50, etc. IIRC the models 40/42 were in a different series. So J3 could actually be the first model 36 of the J prefix SN series.

While you can sell each separately, due to their family history, I'd suggest you keep them together for a serious S&W collector to buy as a group in a well publicized auction.

Just a thought mind you. Might ask over at the S&W Forum as I'm sure they'll offer better advice than I.
