Need front sight remounted on a cut down Super Redhawk

OK here's my dilemma, I recently had a Super redhawk chopped to 4.5in barrel. The Smith soldered on the original Ruger front sight base. Well during test firing the base let loose. I am sure he'll do right on the work but I was wondering if maybe there was something you folks would suggest to get the base back on permanantly. I was thinking that it might need to be drilled and tapped or possibly a rib could be added with screws and then a blade pinned into that. I really want the original base to tell the truth but if solder won't hold it I will need to accept that. Is it possible that it was just a fluke with the solder letting go or is this a case of maybe the wrong type of solder was used? By the way this is a 454/45Colt gun so whatever your suggestions, they gotta be able to take the stress.

At what time did I say I didn't trust the smith? I was just asking for alternative methods of attaching a front sight base so I will have some ideas when I discuss it with the smith. Add positive info or stay out of it really.

I would think a good solder job would hold up. I would recommend using the low temp silver solder (4% silver) and a good flux. I use Stay Clean flux. Perhaps the joint was not good, due to over/underheating.

Sir:

Dear Sir:
I've done that before and I always drill the ramp for a 6x48 or 8x40 screw, counterbore and carefully drill & tap the bbl.
Your Super RH is stainless and you should lo-temp silver-solder it on in addition to the screw.
Now; how to ascertain the hole location.
Coat the bbl. with layout die and with levels be sure the frame is plumb. Then use a FLAT file with a level on it and make a line in the die and position ramp and drill on the line - of course make sure your counterbored screw hole is in the center of the ramp.
DO NOT DRILL THROUGH THE BBL!
