Need Census Advice.

Longshot

New member
I have chosen to only fill out the first question on my 50+ question census long form.

I just got my first follow up visit via a postcard on my door. I do not intend to answer any more questions. I'd gladly just pay my $100.00 (in pennies) to get it over with.

Since I am one of the last to get contacted, I am hoping to benefit from those of you who have successfully protested this thing. How can I "cut to the chase" with these people? I just want to pay and get it over with.

I work nights, and don't want these "concerned people" waking me up from now until our nation goes bankrupt paying them to harrass me.

Thanks for your help.

I thought the door-to-door stuff was over?????
Did they leave their phone #?
Mine did. I'd call them and leave a message: "This is what I'm willing to answer, etc."
I only had the short form, but I told my census taker that I wasn't willing to answer the race/ethnicity question. She said, "No problem."

I agree with Cindy H. The door-to-door stuff is over. I don't think you should start counting out those pennies though. The Census bureau has next to no enforcement power. You can look forward to another 9.5 quiet years until they start it all up again in 2010.

When the "Census Enumerator" finally came to my house, he turned out to be an elderly man who was partially crippled. I gave him the number of people in the house, their names and ages. He wanted to finish the long form for me, but I politely explained to him that I wasn't going to give him any additional information.

"This is where I say, 'none of your business' to the government!" were my exact words.

He just smiled, opened the soda I had offered him, and said, "At this point, they'll just be happy to get whatever they get."

We talked for about 5 more minutes then, about how quickly the surrounding area was growing, how things have changed so much, etc. He told me about his wife and grandchildren, I told him about how much fun my two daughters were.

When he finally was leaving, I said to him, "I'll see you in another ten years." To which he replied, "No way! I've had enough of this damned government work."

I just got my follow-up call yesterday. They dropped by when I wasn't home, and eventually called me.

I said "I've given all the Constitutionally required information" and "one person lives at the address; that's all you need to know." That plus a little meaningless banter ended the discussion pretty quickly.

By this point they're likely quite aware of the objectors. Just say "N people live at the address; that's all the Constitutionally required information" and they should understand that you're "one of them" and leave it at that. Be polite, be short, be firm.

Got my follow up visit today when only my wife was home. My wife explained to her that I had filled out the form with all of the information I cared to give and sent it in months ago.

The census worker said that they didn't get it and would my wife please answer some questions. My wife said NO she would not answer any questions (gotta love her). The census worker then tried to get chummy and soften her up. Big mistake, when my wife digs her heels in, a team of horses can't move her. Census worker noticed our dogs and said, "oh those are my favorite dogs and I use to groom them, what kind are they"? My wife responded, "if they are your favorite kind, you tell me what breed they are"!

I expect this person back again. She will get the same response as before.

Apparently there is a short form you can fill out- regardless of whether or not you were sent the long form. My father is one of the temp census guys- he does much of it over the phone.

This was my first follow-up visit. I'm going to first ask my neighbors not to give out my info when the spies come to make their rounds, then I'm going to call the person named on the contact card and tell him "Game Over".

He's not passing go, and he'll be lucky to collect one hundred dollars :p

Door to door in CA is not yet over.... I was just visted by the supervisor two weeks ago. Seems the regular was afraid of my dogs, would not approach the door to leave a note. lol...

We had the same experience as Cactus this past Thursday night - same excuse. Better half gave name, quantity, and phone number. I was a little disappointed about the phone number, but as she pointed out, we are listed, so if they're that determined they'll be calling anyway. All other questions she responded with, "I don't think you really need that information," in a polite but firm tone. :D

TheBluesMan, thanks ... great story. And, it reinforces a lesson I've learned many times, but always need to remember - even people who seem to represent the 'opposition' are simply people. It is always best to treat them with respect and care, and to win them over with logic, reason and diplomacy.

I know we're discussing the census, but considering the context this year, I saw it as an opportunity to quit cooperating with rampant statism.

We received the short form, and answered only re: the number of folks here ... and, never heard another word.

Regards from AZ

I was personally visited 5 times and 1 phone call. Once by a neighbor, and 4 times by the "supervisor". Each time I politely gave them number in the household and declined to answer any further. On visit number 3 through small talk they also had my phone number which is not listed and I never provided. Squealing neighbors maybe...

I originally received the short form in march or april which I promptly sent back to them with number marked and a nice letter expressing my opinion of the other questions.
