Hi all, I'm being offered a AR-15, the seller describes it as a Colt, not sure if it's pre or post ban, it has a flash suppressor, a 17.5" barrel(?) collapsible stock. I have not seen it yet, the seller is my boss's brother, he'll be bringing it by work tonight. I have the serial #, and I remember something about a on-line resource for finding date of manufacture.
BTW, he's asking $850.
Any help would be gretaly appreciated! He goes back to CA Mon. night.

Dave

From your description, it is a pre-ban. Post-bans cannot have flash suppressor or collapsible stock.

I would check at www.ar15.com, (you may have already) about the serial number.

If it is a pre-ban Colt for $850 it should not be passed up.

Check it out before purchasing as any illegalities? can get you serious time.

Damn, my AR resource book is at the apartment. :( I'll bring it into work tomorrow. I think it breaks down manufacture date by serial numbers.

OK, saw the rifle. It is a POST-ban, with a muzzle brake. The collapsible stock is obviously illegal, so would immediately be disposed of. The gun is in pretty nice shape otherwise. It is a 16.1" barrel.
So...........
I offered him $500, we'll see if he takes it. I'm not really looking for a rifle right now, so no biggie.
Also, how much would a 20" barrel / upper cost me? any ideas?
Thanks!

Is it at Colt or is it some other brand? There is a serious difference in hole styles and aftermarket prices. There are about ten different versions of the Colt model that boggle the logical mind. My opinion is that you have the stock removed before you exit the individual's sight. Bring the tools to remove it yourself. Keep it and sell it if you must but don't jeopardize yourself for somebody else's mistake.

That having been said, you might be better off buying a whole new gun than replacing the upper. Armalite, DPMS, and Bushmaster all make really decent upper assemblies. It's a bit hit-and-miss with other companies. All of my guns are some combination of the three. I'd suggest you get a DCM upper if you are spending the money anyhow. Much more accurate. Dave,

Are you SURE it's post-ban (as in checked the lower's serial number) ? Could it be that the gun has a post-ban upper on a pre-ban lower?

Just checking!

Well then, it was definitely post-ban.
Thanks for the help everyone, He wanted more than $500 and I wouldn't pay more. No biggie.
On another note, what do you think a NIB Miltech M1 Garand is worth? (accesories included in the crate)

Less than $500 for sure. DCM guns fetch more no matter what the Miltech says about their guns. Restoring a gun ruins its collectors value.
