Need advise

I need help. I'm a newbie to shotguns. I want to find an inexpensive shotgun (12 ga.) for home defense. I'm going to the gun show and was hoping to get some advise on what to look for on the used shotgun racks. What manufacturers, models, etc.? What should I look at as far as mechcanical functioning? What should I avoid? Any help would be appreciated.

Also, any recommendations as far as training (pistol and shotgun) in the Southern California area?

Thanks for your help.

Ken Campbell, Moderator of this Forum is a Rangemaster at Gunsite Training Center in Arizona, http://gunsite.net/ .

You simply will not find better training, anywhere.

If you're willing to put in the training, a pump model is reliable and easy to work with. I've always been partial to the Remington 870 action. If you get the police model it is a great base gun to start with and a few minor upgrades would make it a hard to beat, combat ready shotgun.
