I am sure this has been gone over 50,000 times but for a low budget, beginers sniper rifle what do you think I should look at. So far I am trying to decide on a Remington 700 BDL in a .300 Win mag or maybe the .300 RUM. and the 700 VSS in .308.
I know that a custom rifle would surely be best but of the BIG 3 I shoot the rifle the least. So I don't want to spend a ton. Figure I can get into either one of these gun and a good scope for about $1,000. Would like to be under that but I would be willing to spend up to a grand.
I am pretty sure that I want a .308 or .300 mag.

Thanks

How about a Long Range rifle instead?

I'm not sure if I can help you or not... I own quite a few long range rifles in different configurations and a few customs as well... I don't have a sniper rifle as those are offensive military weapons... ;)

From your post it appears you're interested at this point in Remington. I prefer the .308 to the .300 mag, the .308 can do most anything you want a long range rifle to do and not pound the stuffing out of you during a long session at the bench. My understanding of the .308 VS is it's listed in the catalog but not currently in production. Most of the local and online sources have listed the .308 M700 BDL out of stock as well. The ADL #5775 in .308 can still be found listed... wood stock and open sights. Another option is the VLS in .308 with a laminated stock, they are usually in the $550 range.

You may want to consider finding yourself a VS or BDL used. Another option is the M700 PSS or LTR as they are still available and priced in the mid - $700 range. My personal preference is the PSS and LTR in a factory rifle. I have a few variations of each and the little LTR's have become my no questions favorite. Incase you've not heard of the PSS and LTR, Remington doesn't catalog them, they are sold through LE distributors only but they are perfectly legal to own and easy to find. I highly recommend them.

If you'd like to spend less on a rifle to allow for a better scope you should look to Savage. I'm not of much help regarding Savage but someone who knows their line and features will be along presently...

I'd go with the VSS in .308. Apart from the stock, I don't think there's any difference between the VSS & the PSS. It'll do almost anything you want and it's enough rifle to carry around in one day. That is one advantage of the VSS' slimmer stock - it is easier to carry than the PSS. The 700 LTR is also an excellant choice, but is much harder to come by.

Try Bethany Arms

Bethany Arms was listing PSS and LTR rifles yesterday for $730 and $750 + shipping

Also, .308 is a more common caliber. Military uses lots of it. Always good to have something you can find ammo for in case the SHTF.

Short Answer

Remington 700 Varmint and a tasco SS1042 scope.
With mount and rings you're in it for $1000.00 and you'll have beginner rig that you can't break, and will shoot MOA to 1000 yards if you do your part.

I own a Savage in 300WM and if you intend to shoot it often you will want to invest in a excellent quality scope. I am now looking into a Burris with Posi-Lock or maybe upping to a Zeiss or Swarovski. Even though my 300 weighs in at 10 3/4 lbs it has eaten two Simmons (One shot done), a Bushnell (not much better), and a Tasco World Class that has lasted for over 2 years. The Tasco has finally succummed to the beating that a 300 gives. I would suggest that you will want a variable power that goes up to at least 14x for long, precise shots. Quality Scope first then try to pick your rifle. As for the Savage? On a calm day with bench and sandbags I could lay bullets on top of each other at 100yds.

1911 Ford, you've gottem a lot of replies from Remington fans, and that's all you referenced on your post, however, you also said "low budget." Gun tests recently published a test that compared the Rem 700 BDL, the Savage 110, the Ruger M77R, and a CZ 527. They rated the Savage as equal to the Remington for accuracy and quality...the difference:finish and price. The Savage was $449 (retail) with glass-even cheaper w/o glass. The Remington was $633. I've owned several Savages...I wish I'd kept them all. They were all very accurate and well-built guns. If I were you, I'd buy the Savage and save the money for glass.

Thanks so much for your quick replies. Any more will be appreciated. I will also check into Savage. I also posted this question on another board and got several people who told me to look into savage. The reason I want a .308 or .300 mag is because I also want to be able to use this gun for deer if something happens to my other rifles.

I bought a Rem. 700 VSF (same as VSSF except black and blue instead of stainless) in .308 for my long range deer gun. Topped it with a Leupold 6.5 x 20 x 40mm.AO and have been VERY pleased. Did a lot of shopping and the whole rig came in under $1200 . Two friends have bought Savage. One loved his and the other hated it.
