Need advice on trigger improvement

Would appreciate some suggestions on re-working trigger on Ruger Model 77 Mark II - SVT.

Would it be better to just get a quality aftermarket target trigger or is it possible to have the original one re-worked by a gunsmith.

If it is a new gun, I suggest just using it a while and see whether the trigger becomes any better. Dry fire, preferably with a snap cap, and see what happens.

Jim is right, it may get a bit better with some use. The factory trigger can be worked a little, but if you want anything under 5 lbs or so I think you're better off (and much safer) with a good aftermarket trigger.
 
There are several aftermarket replacements available for the Ruger 77 Mk II. That said, they are a bit more complex to install than a typical drop-in trigger like a Remington or Winchester bolt action. If you can't get the factory trigger to smooth out enough, try a Rifle Basix trigger, it has excellent instructions on how to install it.
 
I'm not bashful about diving into a trigger mechanism but in the case of the 77, it is so much easier to replace it than to modify it. Personally, I'd find the cheapest, simplest aftermarket trigger which could provide a clean, four pound break. I find that to be plenty light for hunting or informal target shooting.
 
The cost of modifying it will likely be as much or more than an aftermarket trigger, and modified version will likely not be adjustable.

I have a trigger from Jard, Inc. on my MkII. It is fantastic. Installation, including removal of the original and making adjustments, didn't take 30 minutes. Lighter than advertised, mine is 13 ounces rather than the 1 pound that it said. For me, that's a good thing. $93.50
 
I've used Timney and know there are other aftermarket tiggers you can buy. The main reason I used Timney is because they were the least expensive and have given me good performance. I too am not bashful about getting into the triggers of rifles. Pistols is another matter. ;)
