Need advice on choosing a revolver

No, not one in 454 Casull.:p
I need to get a handgun in 22LR. Since I am tired of busting my thumbs on loading these 22 LR magazines, a revolver seems a better choice this time. I have read all the manufacturers catalogs and found five likely revolvers to choose from. Please give me some feedback on which one is suitable for 50 yard bullseye shooting without a scope.
1) Ruger SP101 6 shots
2) S&W 617 10 shots
3) Taurus 94 9 shots
4) Taurus 970 Tracker 7 shots
5) Taurus 980 Silhoutte 12" barrel 7 shots

hmm

I like the Ruger Single Six. They all come with a .22 WinMag cylinder as well.

Just one more to add to your list. I plan to get the Ruger to go with my Rossi .22 gallery gun.

I would favor the S&W Model 617, I have an old Model 17 Combat Masterpiece which has been in my family for 50 years. A vast amount of ammunition has been fired through it and it is as accurate as ever. A 10 shot stainless steel version would be even better.

I like the taurus 94's myself

I have one and its a real nice 22. if you go for the 617 get the steel cylinder version not the alum one.

50yd. Bullseye?

Any of the older K-frames in 6" or better. Old Colt Officer's Model Match may not be bad either. Taurus used to do a K-frame knock-off known as a M-96, IIRC. Probably wouldn't be a bad choice, and certainly better than the little J-sized M94.:)

Hey I am all for getting a new gun and all.....

but for about 3 bucks you could buy that little plastic thing to help you load your .22 magazines and your thumb is saved. Best couple bucks I ever spent.

Of course you want a new gun so I vote SP101 or Single Six for a single action. Both are awesome.

IMHO, you probably won't go wrong with any of the revolvers you mentioned, although if its target shooting without a scope, small game hunting, plinking, etc., I would run, not walk, to my local gun dealer and pick up a Ruger Super Single Six. I get match grade accuracy from mine with the right ammunition, and versatility with the spare cylinder in .22 WMR. Its a whole lotta gun for the money.

I have a Taurus M-96 and although it looks like the Smith M-17, it is not! My Taurus does not have the silky smooth and crisp trigger of the Smity nor is the barrel quite as good as the Smith. But, for about $100 less than a well used Smith, I thought it was a good purchase.

All are very good guns.

The Ruger is a bit big and heavy and only holds 6 shots. This same gun is made in .357mag so it is much stronger than you'll ever need for .22lr. In .22 this degree of strength isn't really needed and you have the disadvantages I listed in my first sentence but it is a good gun.

The S&W should be nice. Smiths are known for their smooth triggers and actions but the newer ones aren't nearly up to the standards of the older guns.

The Taurus guns should be good guns. I'm very impressed with the quality of Taurus revolvers. The prices should be the lowest of the group you're looking at too. When I get a .22 handgun (believe it or not I still don't have one) it will be the Taurus 94. However, it probably won't be quite as nice as the Smith or as strong as the Ruger (though it is certainly strong enough, and especially in the Tracker form, Taurus does make nice looking guns).

Which one do you like best? When looking at several guns that are all quality guns and assuming none are more than you want to spend the most important issue is which one you like most.
