Hi. Im a new member and I tried posting this on reloading forum but got no response. SO I'll try you wheelgun wizards. Does anyone have any info on shooting 45 Super in a Blackhawk Convertible 45 ACP cylinder? Is it strong enough, any info on handloads for it? Seems like an interesting experiment, thanx for a reply.

I have one in my safe, and I am sorry to say

That all the books that I have I dont have anything with the 45 super in it.
Its a very strong gun capable of heavy loads but with out compairing the loads to ether a 45 ACP or 45 LC I would hesetate.
Its not the 44 Mag gun which has a heaver frame.
Sorry I cant be much help.
I bought mine in the 80 to work up loads in the 45ACP and I wanted somthing that I could shoot heavy loads in to the point of showing pressure sighns and not worry about the gun.

The cylinder is the part that is going to give first on an overload and then the top strap .45 blackhawk convertable cylinder is said to have 80% of the strength of a blackhwak in 44 mag , The working pressure of the the 44 mag is 40K cup this would make the .45 working pressure 32K . If you look at the loads in most manuals for 45 ruger and TC only section you will find that in fact the loads are limited to 32K .
From what I have seen the .45 super has a max pressure of 29K , So it would be fine ?.
Clarks custom guns offers the 460 rowland conversion for the blackhawk it has the same operating pressure as the 45 win mag of 40k and they must think that the 460 rowland is safe ?
I saw recently a 45 win mag cylinder for a blackhawk on Ebay and was tempted to bid but passed , I was not to sure about how safe it was.
The less pressure that is used to get the velocity the less recoil .
I have a .45 convertable and shoot acp rounds once in a while but I shoot mostly warm colt loads or bust out the FA in 454 when I want to really pop
You have to decide what is safe in your guns !!!!

I've run a few boxes of .45 super handloads though my Bis-Hawk convertable.

Gun handled the loads just fine... shooter didn't. Just to much "buck and bluster" for limited gain for me.

Here are a buch of handloads from Real Guns.

Good Luck...

Thanx for the replies and website, it's just what I was looking for. I'vealready bought my powder and bullets, brass is on it's way from Midway. Ready to play!

Some of the Lyman Reloading Guides have a special section for .45 Colt with heavier loads just for the Ruger and Thompson Contender. Hornady also had a phamplet a few years ago with some pretty "sturdy" .45 Colt loads just for those guns. Quantrill
