Need a new lube recipe

Hey Fella's,

Sorry if I come off as a post hog, but I got alot to learn and say :D.
Anyway this lube I'm using isn't working out for me. I used the Gatofeo recipe but at room temperature it is very stiff and not really workable. I mean it will work for lubing wads I guess because I can heat it and pour it on the felt. But I need something more pliable for hand lubing bullets and the occasional chamber mouth. I already have alot of Lamb Tallow and beeswax. So can I leave out the parrafin and just mix the tallow and bees?

As always its much appreciated. And if any of you are ever near Mcminnville TN stop by the Kelvinator in the basement is FULL of SAM ;)

Sure you can but you'll need to experiment to obtain the right degree of softness.
The wax is suppose to be the carrier for the oil or tallow lubricant.
The amount of oil or tallow can be adjusted to obtain the desired softness of the lube, which can be dependent on the climate.
Your lube needs to be softened up somehow so may as well get rid of the paraffin since that's harder than beeswax.
It's basically a less expensive substitute for beeswax.

There's a lot of threads about lube recipes but here's one where some folks mention using an oil in the mix:

arcticap and duelist are right, the more tallow, lard or fat you add from whatever source (in proportion to the beeswax) the softer the lube will be at room temp. I cook up a pretty soft mix to have for when I want to just get some on a rag to wipe down the guns or smear some in the lube grooves of a bullet and it ends up being mostly lard with some beeswax in the mix. I just started using gatofeos recipe for making felt wads and will be test firing as soon as it quits raining here.

This is an old lube but still has a following and has never failed me when using it
for Black Powder. I understand it can be used for smokeless if you are using
low-pressure loads.

50% bees wax
40% Crisco or lard
10% canola oil

I heat this in a cheap Walmart crock pot, I now substitute hydrous lanolin for the canola oil.

This is smoking gun's lube pill recipe.

Dang I'm broke Lube Pills

What I did was start out with:
Parafin comes in a brick divided to to 4 like a stick a butter, I used a stick.
Then 1/4 of a Bolwax Toilet Seal Ring(Beeswax)substitute or beeswax or use with the parafin.
Then 8-10 Tablespoons of Olive Oil/soy oil
The Olive oil is the Lube the Waxes just carry it and keep the pill as
you want it.(consistacey/hard or soft...climate time of year)
And that made alot about 600 pills...about 1/8" thick for the most part.
Place the lube mixture in a small saucepan, place the small saucepan in a larger pan with water
boilin' the water and sorta poach the lube mix to a liquid.
level stiff heated pizza pan(or 7-9" heavy pie pan)is the best thing to pour your mix into...
so mix cools evenly(flat) .Place in fridge when it's set stiff(optional)
And worked good for me...you need to try your best guess and add/subract as you like them
for your use.

Punch out to the caliber of your choice, with a tube. Place lube pill over powder with ball
on top. You'll shoot all day without binding. Keeps cylinder lubed fouling soft and barrel
relatively clean.

It works.

Thanks for all the suggestions guys. And I like that pill idea.

My lube is made with two pounds of lamb's tallow and one pound of bee's wax. It works great in all seasons.

And thank you Mike for listing your mix. I saw you lube on your 1851 Navy video, and I like the consistency of it. Thanks for all your videos. You do a great job with them!!
