We just picked up a chocolate lab puppy a few days ago and we can't settle on a name. We've already rejected the typical names for chocolate labs like Hershey and Cocoa. I'd like to use a gun name, but can't think of anything that my wife likes. Could you guys please help? Throw some names out there. It's a male pup.

If I had a choc lab and wanted a gun name, there's only one:

Cocobolo

houndawg, Dogs really like one syllable names. Why not call him Hank! Fire or shoot would be a good name except that the dog would go nuts in a duck blind! Colt, no way!
Sig might work.

OK, this one is free : "FETCHER"!
Let me know if you should use it. I think its a cool name for a retreiver (sp)

Already got my chocolate lab named & I'm still probably a year out from getting one - if it's a chocolate -will probably go for another black.

Last lab I had was a black & his name was Spook (RIP & God bless his soul <sniff> ).

We've got a mix right now. Mom's an AKC Chessie who had a fling with a choc/wired-hair pointer mix. She, who looks like a walrus :) is named chock-o. (The Wife's doing & it works)

The chocolate we'll likely get will be named Bosco - what else? ;)

In all dog names, I like to use one syllable as it is, in effect, a command in its own right & should be short, to the point & have that bit of "bark" to it - just to get their attention.

BTW, I highly recommend Richard Wolter's (RIP) books for training labs. Water Dog, Gun Dog especially are great & Family Dog is pretty good too - but a bit moreso for the people than for the dog.

Had a buddy back in Texas that had the same problem . He did not want to embarass himself by calling his new dog DOG so he pondered for several weeks for a name that would show considerable thought and research . Finally one day I saw him in the laundry room and he proudly announced that he was going with Big Headed Dog . He thought DOG was not worthy of respect .
Learn a lesson from this fella and give it considerable thought . Since common sense dictates that we purchase gifts that we ourselves would want just imagine what you would want to be called if the dog were naming you . Stud , Bearkiller , Jaws of Death ..............

I'd vote with Jack99. There are more options, but when you want to holler out the back door for the dog - it needs a name that starts with a hard consonent.

I'm dog sitting a (mostly) choc. lab for my eldest daughter. She named him O'Paag(sp) which is, she tells me, "Gift" or "offering" in one of the Indian languages.

I've noticed with the dog that the first syliable works kind of like a middle name for a kid. Generally the dog answers to "Paag". When you holler "O'Paag" he knows he's in deep doo doo.

My cousin, when he was six years old somehow got himself a mongrel pup. One day some visiting adult asked Patrick what his dog's name was.

"Dawg."

"That's a silly name for a dog."

With a straight face, Patrick answered back, "Do you think he would answer to 'Cat'?"

This is just an aside--several years ago we used to give Police dogs the attack command "Passof"---unfortunately it did sound to the dogs remarkably like "Piss Off".
As you can imagine the latter term is not infrequently used. The attack command was later changed to "Raus".

A chocolet lab + gun type name = Browning ;)

I named my one dog Ruger.

Well, actually, she named herself. When I first saw her, she was lying in the back of a car with the muzzle of a Ruger Blackhawk .357 point out from between her paws.

The owners had just been arrested for illegal possession of a gun in DC.

Chances are he knows how to use it.

The best critter names I ever heard of was what my kid brother named his two pet female rats: Tammy Faye and Jessica Hahn.

:)

Anyways...as to the doggie, how 'bout...

"Wayne"? "Chuck"?

Do I hear "floppy eared beastie"? :)

I don't have a dog at present, but how about Snert " ala Hagar the Horrible? as I recall, in the cartoon, Snert is a pointer, though. It is, though, a one-syllable name!
