Need a good load for .223 using Hornady 55 gr FMJ BT

Hi All,

I am new to reloading for the .223 and new to these forums but not to reloading itself. I have recently finished building an AR in .223 Wylde and am wanting to work up a good load for it. I currently have some IMR-4198 and have purchased some 55 grain Hornady FMJ BT's. I have CCI 450's and Remington 7 1/2's for primers and some LC and FC brass.

I am wondering if anyone has worked up a good/accurate load with these components. Also, I do not have a Hornady book so I don't know what their recommended OAL is for that bullet. Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks in advance!

Welcome to TFL

Believe it or not the Hornady manual does not list the 55gr FMJ-BT in there 5.56 data . That to me seems stupid . Anyways they do have that bullet listed in the 223 data .

Hornady 223 Rem using a 26" barrel
55gr FMJ-BT
IMR 4198
Min 17.4gr @ 2800fps
Max 20.0gr @ 3100fps
OAL 2.200 but I load them to 2.240 for my AR using 25gr IMR 4895 and that is seated right to the base of the crimp grove . I do not crimp my AR loads . If you plan to crimp you will need to seat to Hornady specs .

You didn't mention what your rifle barrel is but my AR-15 16" bbl "service rifle" go to load is:

55gr Hornady FMJ cannalured
25.1 gr of Win 748
about 2645 fps

I do tweak the charge +/- a bit depending on the ambient temps. I've tried all the way up to a compressed load at 3290 fps , and see no added accuracy. My groups start opening up >2900 fps.
