This was a long post, so I've edited it to save time.

Did Colt ever make a .44-40 SAA with an italic barrel address?

I hear the italic address ended in 1876, and the .44-40 chambering was introduced in the Colt 1878 (or they started calling them COLT FRONTIER SIX SHOOTERs in 1878).

Was there a "pre-Colt Frontier Six Shooter" SAA chambered in .44-40 before the italic address style changed to block letters...?

Thanks!

I read your post before you edited it. if you're thinking your third generation was made back in the 1800's you're wrong. Third generation saa's were made from the mid 1970's till the 1980's. I don't know the exact dates and as a matter of fact they're still available fom the Colt Custom Shop. 44-40 came out in 1873 in Winchester rifles and Colt revolvers but it was called and so marked on guns as .44 WCF

R.L Wilson's Colt, An American Legend says that 1878 is the year the 44wcf was introduced " In Quantity." This seems to indicate that small numbers might have been made before that time.

Its feasible as he gives 1875 as the year of introduction for the .44 rimfire series and 1876 for the .476 Eley. Distribution of the .45 colts was barely underway in 1875 but even then, they had started working with other calibers. Serial number for all Colt SAAs( except the .44 rimfires which are number separately) begin at 15,000 at the start of 1875, reach 22,000 by the beginning of 1876 and are up to 41,000 by '78.
