Need a .44 to add to the family

I have a S&W 617 and 686, both in 4" and I am hankering for a .44 like the 629. Is getting a 4" a mistake in this size, considering the extra recoil? What do most people own? It will be a home defense/range/safe queen (hopefully not)...not likely for any carrying around.

Thanks!

If you like the 4", I see no reason not to get it. Recoil will be stout in both 4" and 6" with full powered .44 magnums.....a few ounces either way won't make a HUGE difference. And a 4" is a little easier to manuever in tight spaces...

Personally, I like longer barrels but most of my shooting is outdoors and at further ranges. For home defense, I think the 4" barrel will serve you better.

My only .44 Magnum is a 5.5" Redhawk, and its nice and heavy to soak up recoil, but with 300 grain bear loads it manages to hurt a bit.

Shrink,
I have owned both 629 4" and 629 Classic 5". "IMO" the 629 Classic 5" full underlug balances in the hand better and is much more comfortable to shoot. It also seems to group better than the 4" did. But this is in the realm of personal preference and YMMV.

Good shooting and be safe.

FWIW my next handgun is the 4 inch 629...I have had an 8 3/8 inch one (29) and a six inch one (629) before...my main .44 mag now is the Ruger 5.5 inch Redhawk. But my next one will be the 4 inch 629 because it ia slightly smaller and lighter...I was also looking at the 329...ouch, but easy (light) to carry.
My recommendation depending on what you want to do with it is to look at the Redhawk, and the 629...see which you like best and then pick one...or get both like I will...it just takes longer (for me) to get both. My pick if I could only have one though would be the Redhawk. I think I am right on this when I say that the Redhawk will shoot those longer Garrett cartridges if you ever decide you want to....lots of power in a .44 mag.

When it comes to 44 Magnums, S&W or Taurus are fine. I prefer 5" barrels as they balance well, provide enough mass for recoil control and they simply look good aesthetically. The use of Mag-Safe 44s in HD would be a good compromise. I would seek out a high contrast front ramp sight and install Millets rear white outline adjustable sights in place of the factory sights anyway. I also suggest 44 Specials for day to day use.
