Need 870 advice on barrels/receiver.

I am looking for one Remington 870 shotgun that can do this:

* Be a seven shot HD gun with sling and 18" barrel
(I'm thinking the Express Synthetic Seven Round model)

* Be a slug gun for deer, and using the new Remington Sabot rounds
(need rifled barrel of at least 20" and scope mount; Express Deer Fully Rifled?)

* Be a long gun for Canadian geese and for wild turkeys in the spring
(need a smooth bore barrel with adj. choke; Express 30" VT?)

Can someone tell me if the barrels I need for scenarios 2 and 3 work fully with the Express Magnum receiver on the Express Synthetic Seven Round model, and what I should ask for when I order it? I listed what I think I want, but need to be sure. Dealer no helpee. I have the Remington catalog and their website, but I am confused as to which barrels work with which receivers.

Thanks for any help at all.

I have an 870 Express seven shot tactical. This place has the best selection of Express barrels I've seen.

Yes, you can make that set of combinations work. And it will work well, given the 870's modular nature.

My advice would be to look for used barrels, so you can find them with the barrel ring spring-loaded detents in place, though. New Express barrels don't have them, they're set up for use with the new system that requires magazine tube dimples and the combination plastic magazine spring detent/magazine cap retainer.

In addition, you'll need an 'old style' magazine cap with the dimples around the outside edge, which works with the detent style barrels. You'll also need a standard length magazine spring and one of the cup type spring steel magazine spreing retainers, if you choose to use one that is. Some folk get along without one, you just have to remember to hold onto the magazine cap when you unscrew it.

And you'll need a magazine plug, to stay legal on magazine capacity when hunting migratory game birds.

That should do you... look at Corson's or the Barrel Exchange for possibiities on used barrels with the detent in place.
