need .45 ACP advice

I'd like to get a wheelgun that shoots .45 ACP. I'm looking for something fairly large and heavy with a 4" to 8" barrel.

I've got about $400 to spend but could do without lunch for the next month to push it to $500 if I really need to.

So what do you guys recommend?

I picked up a Ruger Vacquero with two cylinders, a .45lc and .45 acp for $399. It has a 4 5/8" barrel, but they have a 6 1/2" model as well. Great gun, though the accuracy falls off a bit with the .45acp.

I've seen a few Smith Mountain guns in .45 acp, and I believe Taurus is making one as well. Not sure about prices though.

It's not new by a long sight, but have you ever shot a 1917 S&W? I have one of the Brazilian contract guns made in the late '30's and it is sweet. Hot rodding is not an option, but it will put all 6 through one hole at around 10 yds. (Or it would before aging caught up with my eyes!!) Costs I've seen run around $350 to $425, more if in great shape. A piece of history that is very pleasing to use and very functional.

If you can get a Smith&Wesson Model 625 new or used. If you cant afford that, the S&W Brazilian pistols are excellent. They were made beyween WW 1 and WW 2 when Smith&Wesson's quality was outstanding. Either way, pickup some full moon clips and you will have an outstanding revolver, powerful, accurate and reliable.

Ya, I'd pick up an S&W 1917 in a minute if I ever saw one. I've got a C&R so I wouldn't even need to go through an FFL for that one. I wouldn't mind coming across an old S&W Model 25 either.

Has anybody had any experience with the Colt 1917? Is it anywhere as nice as the S&W?

One of the benefits I see of these ex-military revolvers is that they use moon clips. I'm pretty sure that none of the civilian .45s do, right?

All of the S&W 45ACPs use moon clips. They also will use 45 Auto Rim without the moon clips. I have the 25-2 in 6.5 and 6 inch barrels, a Brazilian 1917, and an 625-3. All are great shooters. I picked up all of mine on auction over at auctionarms.com and gunbroker.com.

Recently I bought Taurus Tracker in 45 ACP and love it. Paid exactly 400 bucks. Highly recommend. Nice made revolver. Well, I would like to have a regular Hogue grips, but they are not available for this revolver for now.

Yes, I have and no it is not.

I have both the Colt New Service and Colt 1917. I also have the S&W 1917 and a bunch of the Brazilian Contract 1917s. IMHO, the S&Ws are the better, more reliable guns and certainly easier to get parts for.
