Hello, I am looking for a .22LR Revovler to use for target practice. It needs to be able to hold up well and be accurate. I want it to be at least a 4" barrel.
My first .22LR was the Walther P22 (which I regret trading in...) and my second was a Ruger MKII. Here is what I have been looking at, I want one that is under $250, but keep in mind that I have never owned a revolver before (shot a few, but never owned one) and I do not know what I am talking about so... here they are:

Taurus 941
Commanche
and any other suggestions that look similar to these...

If I cannot find anything that really catches my attention, I will probably just buy another Walther P22. Thanks in advance for your help!

My preference is older H&R 22 revolvers. IF you can find them. Modern 22s are usually of good quality. I have had a Commanche 22. It is a decent cheap revolver. If you can afford better, buy better. Taurus 4" 941 is about the best inexpensive revolver out there. They have extraction issues in my experience. Ruger 22s are generally good and functional. Bearcats, Single Sixes, Bisleys or SP-101 are all great revolver choices. I won't suggest S&W due to your budget. I will say that I would add a hundred dollars to the budget and look for a used S&W 22. 617 revolvers are nice.

Look for a Dan Wesson M22 (blued steel) or M722 (ss) and preferably one from the Monson era. DW's usually don't hold a resale value and can be bought fairly cheap used, but are phenomenally accurate. It also has the unique barrel change system so you can change to other barrel lengths in a matter of minutes.

I recently purchased a Taurus 94ss5. I posted a range report on this forum a week or two ago. So far I have been very pleased. From reading posts here it seems that many do not like them in rimfire versions.

Let me second the Dan Wesson 722.

Here is mine:

50 shots, 15 yards, very accurate. Dirt cheap also. I paid more then your $250 for mine, but I wanted THIS SERIAL NUMBER (my favorite number)! Otherwise $250 is a good price. The left target is double action, right target single action.

the commanche is IMO the best looking of the .22 revolvers and I definitely like the price tag... is it worth the $175? I understand that it would probably not have the quality of a ruger or s&w, but just for plinking and target shooting, all I need is for it to be accurate and not malfunction.... does anyone have any comments on this pistol?

I've only shot two revolvers in .22. The first was my Dads S&W K frame. Loved that gun...but he gave it to my brother two years ago. The second was a Colt Diamondback. Both shoot better than I do, which is good...makes me want to practice. I think any shooter will be glad to have a .22 wheelgun in his/her collection. Buy one and take it shooting every time you go to the range...you'll have fun!
Mark.

Do you know:

1. When dates exactly are the Monson era?

2. How does one identify from markings which era the example is from?

Thanks a lot!

22LR revolver advice

I have two 22LR revolvers both S&W 617's both 4 inch barrels ten round cylinders. Both guns have over 10,000 rounds each. They both shoot and look as if they were new. Great gun. The 22LR revolver is one of the most fun guns you can own. Just be carefull. They will eat up a brick in a heart beat!!!! Best of luck
