(Excerpts from)April 16 Neal Knox Report -- House Judiciary Chairman Henry Hyde (R-Ill.) has been trying to develop a "compromise" on the Senate-passed Juvenile Justice gun package, but in an appearance with Sen. Charles Schumer (D-N.Y.) on NBC "Meet the Press" this morning, he flatly declared the Lautenberg gun show amendment "won't fly."
While Schumer kept declaring his and the Clinton Administration's eagerness to compromise, he also made it clear that they won't accept anything less than the Lautenberg language.
Good.
Rep. Hyde rather angrily declared that "Lautenberg can't pass... I won't support it." He said the Administration "keeps moving the goal posts" -- the same complaint he made after breaking off negotiations last fall.
..........
The anti-gun crowd says Smith & Wesson is trying to "weasel out" of its agreement with the Clinton Administration by "clarifications" of their understanding of its provisions -- such as that the restrictions on gun sales by their dealers would only apply to S&W products.
S&W is clearly feeling the heat from the consumer boycott of its products, and the decisions of many major distributors and dealers not to agree to the requirements S&W signed -- most recently, Larry Potterfield of Midway. (emphasis added)
