May 22 Neal Knox Report -- Charlton Heston will today be
elected to a third term -- the first three-year NRA President in at
least three-quarters of a century.
It was made possible by an NRA bylaw amendment passed by the
board last fall which stipulated that Heston was an exception to the bylaw
prohibiting a president from succeeding himself more than once.
--------------
I spoke at an 8 a.m. Saturday NRA Solidarity rally, sponsored
by Grass Roots North Carolina. It drew over 400, many wearing
vibrant green T-shirts and carrying "Guns Save Lives" signs. They
marched the three-quarter mile to the NRA convention hall, where
they were greeted by cheers of other members coming to the annual
meetings.
I told the crowd that GRNC President Paul Vallone had invited
the best-known critic of the present NRA leadership to keynote an
NRA solidarity meeting so "Bill Clinton, Al Gore and the press will
know they can take no comfort from the arguments within NRA. That
which binds us together is infinitely greater than that on which we
disagree."
--------------
Inside the convention center and exhibit hall -- which drew a
record 52,140 registrants -- there was standing room only to hear
powerful speeches from all the officers, and a barn-burner by
Charlton Heston.
Executive V.P. Wayne LaPierre said membership stands at a
record 3.6 million (the highest since the 3.5 million of January
1995, the month Republicans took control of Congress, and members
foolishly thought they could relax.
Heston wound up his speech holding a flintlock rifle high over his head
and proclaiming "From My Cold Dead Hands." He repeated the
performance at the close of Saturday night's banquet.
A Benefactor Member told me "I would have been more impressed
if he had held up an AK-47 or AR-15, because he's going to have a
hard time getting that flinter loaded as BATF breaks down his
door."
After the speeches at the Annual Meeting of Members Saturday,
the election results were read. All 13 on the NRA establishment's
Do Not Vote For list were defeated. The top vote-getter among non-
Nominating Committee picks was Sally Brodbeck, followed by me,
Glenn Voorhees, Joe Olson and Weldon Clark.
The meeting was again adjourned by a director before any self-
congratulatory non-director-prepared resolutions were heard.
Member resolutions weren't even read.
-------------
At the banquet that night, LaPierre announced that entertainer
Louise Mandrell was elected as 76th Director, the one-year term
chosen by members attending the annual meeting. I was a far-back
second.
Louise was qualified to run by a write-in vote campaign first
announced at the same Los Angeles NRA meeting last February at
which 1st V.P. Kayne Robinson made his grossly exaggerated boasts
about NRA's relationship with George W. Bush -- which is featured
in Handgun Control Inc.'s latest TV ads.
The Exhibit Hall was the best that I have seen in many years,
and perhaps the largest ever -- and this was my 34th.
A lot of people were wearing yellow "Boycott S&W" stickers --
including many admiring the newest Smith & Wessons at their well-
attended display.
