NE Ohio Deer hunting

These are pics from the recent past. First is from one drive...maybe 35 minutes after sunrise they were all on the ground! Three big does, one button buck and a small eight pt.

Second is my oldest son with his "first" deer! Man did that one wear me out! I was witness to MANY deer being scared to death for three years before he finally hit one!

Third was last year. My eight year old's first deer hunt. As you can see, he was little more successful than hi older brother. First day, first hunt!

Nice pics - looks like some great memories :)

Where do you hunt out here? HOW do you hunt out here? I'm giving my first go down on the wildlife area in Trumbull. My only experience prior had been on small parcels in Wisconsin - all "long" rifle shots by 12ga standards. I've hunted turkey successfully up in Ashtabula but the DNR gents at the Grand River rifle range were telling me I'm rolling the dice by hitting those woods alone. I'll probably still go back for turkey, and maybe for waterfowl after deer gun, but I figured I'd hit the "big" woods to the south for deer, and try to just use a climbing stand over trails and river crossings deeper than your average hunter would want to go.

Anyway, best of luck this year - maybe I'll see you out there!

I wish I had a camera for every occasion that we've hunted, just not always easy to have it available.

I hunt stands sometimes, but mostly off the ground. I just find a place near a travel corridor and stand where I'm kind of hidden in most directions. On the first couple of days, I'll hunt by myself mostly. Near the weekend, we get together and put on drives. I live near Berlin Reservoir, so I have access to those public lands also if I don't want to hunt some private farms I have. Some of the farms are very good around here. Hunt a tree line along a field and you're bound to see something. I don't know much about Grande River. I've hunted the Mosquito Lake Reserve for some of the controlled deer hunts, but never Grande River. The tall timbers seem good for the first day, but once they start getting spooked, you'll need to be in the thick and pushing them.

We also try to go down south at least once during the week also. If interested, we could hook up. I like Egypt Valley. About a two hour drive, but decent public lands....tall hills!

Email me if interested in going south with us, Steve (winkie9@embarqmail.com)

You talking Ohio Power?

Having owned property in Astabula, 1/2mile for the Pa line. you shou check with the DNR for "permission to hunt" properties, in that area (Pierpont township).

Only other are that great is the Soutner Waynr National Forest and Ohio Power.

Egypt Valley isn't Ohio Power, but it's in that general area. I go down 77 sout to 70 east, then about 10 miles east on 70. You catch the southern end of Egypt Valley. It's reclaimed strip mine lands. You can get a map of the are on www.wildohio.com under the hunting maps. I believe it's north east of Cambridge, in Belmont county (?)

I like Egypt Valley.

A magazine ran a story and mentioned Egypt Valley as a big buck hot spot a few weeks ago. The same thing happened a few years ago to my hunting spot and there were TONS of folks hunting there that year and the next year because they read the article.

I would avoid Egypt Valley for the upcoming gun season; I bet it will be swamped with hunter orange.

I didn't see any BIG bucks there? I did see some decent does, but I just liked hunting there because I didn't see an orange SEA! I usually don't go that way until the end of the week or during the second weekend. I stya home on private land early.
