Hooray for Philip Morris. Warm and Fuzzy time. While they put a good face on it, I'll bet part of the problem was the United Way's tactics against the Boy Scouts. Hopefully other deep pocket corporations will follow.

Philip Morris pulls out of United Way

By JOE SCHLATTER

CONCORD - Philip Morris will no longer contribute to the United Way.

The tobacco giant has decided to allow its employees to contribute directly to their communities in whichever way they see fit, said spokesman Benny Darden.

"We are in no way dissatisfied with our involvement with the United Way and have enjoyed our partnership with them," said Darden.

Funds normally collected from employees for the United Way will instead go into a Philip Morris Employee Community Fund.

"This new fund allows our employees to choose where their own contributions go within their own community," Darden said.

The new fund will be managed by employees with an employee committee deciding where the funds will go. Employees will then make actual check presentations in their communities.

"This puts a face on the Philip Morris family which the community can see, bringing us closer to our community," said Darden, whose title is North Carolina community relations director.

He said the company and United Way have had many years of successful partnership and the change is for no other reason than improved community relations.

Philip Morris' sister companies have similar funds and have seen contributions increase from their employees, Darden said.

Tom Dayvault, chairman of United Way in Cabarrus County, agrees that the change is congenial.

"Since the United Way supports its contributing agencies in any way, we are confident that Philip Morris' move is no reflection of dissatisfaction with our campaign," said Dayvault.

He adds that Philip Morris has been an excellent corporate and employee contributor to the United Way.

Employees will be able to make a choice in this yea'rs contribution, the United Way fund or the Philip Morris fund. Next year the Philip Morris fund will be their only option.

They speak so highly of each other one must wonder what they are thinking . " I don't like what you are doing so I'm keeping my money out of your control ." " Well we enjoy using our considerable financial resources to make political statements ."
Score one for Philip Morris .

I just love how some businesses strongarm their employees into contributing to UW.
I was getting some new tires for my car one morning and happened to meet the local head honcho of the Red Cross. I mentioned how my wife's work was pressing everyone to donate through the United Way. He explained to me (can't remember the exact numbers) how contributing directly keeps UW from taking a chunk of the money before it gets where I wanted in the first place. I always contribute directly. I would suggest that everyone else do as well.

Heard in the past that the head guy at UW gets an awfull lot of money. Seemed exorbant at the time I heard about it, considering his organization and what it is about.

The United Way is a crock that depends on your boss kicking your ass so he can look good.

The past CEO of the UW was a crook. The executives get salaries in the 6 digit range.

The head of the Salvation Army makes around
40K the last I heard.

At work, years ago, they posted a list of who didn't give to the UW. That's charitable.

Take the time to find a charity you like and send them a check directly and screw the cocktail party set.

Was asked by my manager to run the canvassing for UW for our dept. I explained to him I have not contributed to UW for years due to philosophical differences with some of the organizations our compnay 'partners' with via UW. He persisted until I told him the logical extension of my not contributing precludes me from encouraging others to participate in something I find morally objectionable. Took awhile but he got it. Hopefully it won't have a negative affect on my rating but if it does, so be it.

Chris..

The Kansas City, Missouri PD strong armed their officers into contributing to the UW. I refused. much to the chagrin of my supervisors. Just to show I was not doing it simply to be cheap I contribuated to the Red Cross.

Many of these companies try to make it sound as if you are the only person in the whole company that is not giving to the UW. They try to find someone that will be aggressive with those that won't contribute so you must be firm . If you must make a statement just tell them that you donate to the NRA and the BSA . If it affects your job you're in the wrong place anyway .

I pulled our UW contributtion several years ago after a scandal with their top execs. I also didn't like the pressure or strings the UW put on the money they handed out to local groups. They screwed up several fund raising events for a nonprofit org I was on the Board of & that was the last straw.

Now the company encourages the employees to follow the company's lead in donating to causes and organizations we are interested in. As was stated earlier, more gets to the organization if give it directly.

By giving to UW you may be donating to groups you would NOT support normally.

Ladies and Gentlemen, please send your contributions to my agency that helps handicapped adults find gainful employment. My agency is a UWay agency and the point made earlier about direct contributions is true. Support a non-profit in your area that is doing good. We call the UWay "the golden handcuffs". If you designate a donation through UWay it does no good. In most cases, if the total designated donation = more than the allocation from UWay, the agency still only gets what is allocated. I'm not sure of their stand with the Boy Scouts, in our area they are still heavily funded. If the national UWay takes a stance against the Boy Scouts, I say let them ESAD! You know who..... The SOB at TFL! P.S. I wasn't joking about the contribution, I will be happy to let any TFL member know what my agency has done in it's 15 year exsistance. We kick butt and could use help from anyone who thinks that meaningful employment can change a persons life!
