NBA Commissioner David Stern on carrying guns

NBA commissioner David Stern said:
“It’s a pretty, I think, widely accepted statistic that if you carry a gun, your chances of being shot by one increase dramatically,” Stern said during his preseason conference call. “We think this is an alarming subject, that although you’ll read players saying how they feel safer with guns, in fact those guns actually make them less safe. And it’s a real issue.”

Where does he get this crap? Who the hell is he to tell players what to do when they are not on league business? That is like your boss saying you can't carry when you are not at work. And what is this crap about a "widely accepted statistic" that your chances of being shot by a gun increase dramatically if you carry one?

Now most NBA players are pretty big guys and they are all very athletic. I don't think I would want to get in a tangle with any of them (especially Shaq). I can imagine that they do have some crazy fans that do stupid things when they lose or constantly hound them. Regardless of the fact that NBA players are usually celbrities, I don't think any boss should get to tell an employee what not to do when they are not on the company clock. (no illegal drugs or excessive drinking of course... reasonable amount of rest should also be considered a legit requirement)

You bring up many good points however, if I am the owner of a company, I have the right to dictate policy for that company.

As to off the clock situations, that is a different matter, and one can only be dictated by contractual obligations, IE: no skiing, snowboarding, Etc.

I do not agree(strongly disagree with the statements), of Mr. Stern, however he is entitlted to his opinion, and in light of recent incidents, may be correct.

Proper training, and lack of putting onesself at high risk un-necessaraily, would probably go a long way to negate these feelings.

Till the players mature to an adult leval, well who knows what awaits?

if you carry a gun, your chances of being shot by one increase dramatically
The conclusion being that the gun itself acts as a bullet magnet rather than the other way around?
Specious reasoning at it's finest :p Correlation <> causality; a fact that many people conveniently forget when discussing political subjects...

It is far easier to blame the guns than the immature players who have been coddled by the system ever since it was realized they could throw a ball through a hoop.

And not only that, it's proven that more people who get out on the streets in cars get into car wrecks than those who stay home.

Henceforth, all NBA players will STAY AT HOME until game time, when they can helicopter to the game.

Oh, wait, helicopters crash too...that won't work...

<bangs head against the WALL>

How does anybody that dim get to be NBA commissioner??????

Re: Commissioner Stern

Maybe Gunowners need to tell Mr Stern how to run the NBA. He needs to stick to his job as Commissioner and leave his opinions regarding Guns at the door.

I'm sure now that Mr. Stern has identified his position on players leaving guns home, he has immediately arranged for each and every one to be provided with a 24 hour bodyguard so that no harm comes to them. Way to go, Mr. Stern........you really know what you're talking about..:(

"We think this is an alarming subject, that although you'll read players saying how they feel safer with guns, in fact those guns actually make them less safe..."

NO! It's the stupid things they do and say that make the NBA players less safe. If you go out, shoot your mouth off, and get yourself shot, it's not the gun's fault! It's YOUR FAULT!!! :barf: :barf: :barf:

Well, I know that carrying a gun dramatically increases my chances of being shot, since I won't allow myself to be beaten or stabbed quietly while carrying.

Yeah, so when I'm assaulted by a knife wielding street demon, I'll sure be safer because I wasn't, you know, packing any heat.

Friggen moron.

this should bring the reasoning to light.....

He's a freaking Dem from NYC what do you expect, He of course has two armed guard that escort him everywhere.

The NBA's collective bargaining agreement allows players to own licensed guns,

Interesting. So I guess the Dallas Maverick players, Houston Rocket players, and many others in relatively free states, cannot own guns at all, since there is no method extant for licensing them for mere ownership.
