Navy SEALs tests of Glock pistols

Hard Ball

An ex SEAL I met recently at the range told me that the SEALs tested 9mm Glock pistols a few yeras ago and found them unsuitable for combat (at least by SEAL standards) Does anyone have anymore information on these tests and what the problem that led to the Glock's failure was?

The Glock is a fine pistol. Maybe they found something better? I'm not even sure what their "official" pistol is. I've read that the HK SOCOM is used, as well as the HK USP and P7M8. I think they pick a pistol based on the job at hand. Do individual SEAL operators have a choice from a list of approved models, or is it "one size fits all"?

I'm not sure what autoloader they typcially use nowadays but a person I know who works with some SEALS (security consulting)said that they told him that they still use S&W M66's in .357 magnum when they do things which require them to travel underwater any distance (taking oil rigs, etc.). When you absolutely have to rely on your firearm, use a wheelgun! :)

Father was in SBU, so I got to meet a lot of SEALs. Their issued sidearm is Sig226, but a lot carry what they like. The sidearm is not considered a primary assault weapon. It's a last ditch tool used mainly when all else fails. I know that a lot of SEAL's carry Glocks. Oh yeah, some still do carry SW66's. Don't know why.

The last time I trained with the SEALS when I was stationed in Hawaii (1998), 8 of the 10 I was with were using the big MK23's, and 2 were still using SiG P226's.

They seem to carry a lot of stuff ;) I hear a lot of semi-credible sources telling different stories.

The SEALs I know personally tell me that the Glock is very popular with the SEALs. Models 20, 30, 21, 27 and the 9mm varities mostly.

They also, some of them carry USP's (the regular ones) and a few carry 1911's.

Standard issue is Sig 226 because the Beretta failed them and the Sig was the only other gun that the military would buy for them, so that is what they get for free if they want it. Many opt to buy their own guns including the ones above.
Of course, there are a lot of SEALs these days as the program got very popular, but that is the truth from SEALs that I know personally.

The NAVY SEALs standard issue handgun is the SIG-SAUER P226 IN 9mm. but the SEALs carry a lot of handguns the H&k MARK 23 (SOCOM) the H&K P7M13. the H&k USP. the H&k P9 Series. the BERETTA M9. the GLOCK 17. the GLOCK 21. and the 1911-A1.
