National FOP

There's been a whole lot of talk about LEOs of all stripes (as it were) and their potential role in the near future in regards to the 2A. Based on something I saw on FB, I went on the hunt to discover the National FOP's position. It supports expanding background checks:

Somehow, Chuck Canterbury, National President of the FOP, has rationalized that it is possible for the FOP to:
  • Support the 2A rights of law-abiding citizens;
  • Support expanding background checks;
  • Support increasing and expanding the NICS system;
  • Support increased funding ("reinvigoration") of the BATFE.

It's like playing, "Which one doesn't belong?" :rolleyes:

I'm not surprised. Keep in mind that this organization's primary reason for existence is to ensure that law enforcement jobs are well-paid, safe, and secure. More restrictive gun laws ensure good jobs for the officers and agents enforcing those laws. Crooks are less likely to shoot back if they're not well-armed, theoretically keeping LEOs safer.

Notice how much of the letter is dedicated to discussing law enforcement's lack of resources and manpower; the focus is more cops with better equipment and better pay.

I don't mean to bash the FOP or seem snide. Just like the NRA's members expect the organization to support the RKBA, the FOP's members expect the organization to promote good law enforcement jobs. They're simply holding up their end of the deal. They're fundamentally a labor organization, not a civil rights organization.
