narrowing it down

Okay, I narrowed down my prospects for a CCW. For revolvers I'm looking at the Ruger SP101 in .357 (KSP-321XL). I can get one new for $339 and it's got a concealed hammer. S&W Mod. 60 in .357 -- don't know how much a used one would cost, but it has a hammer spur. Taurus 605 (also .357) new for $239. AND I can get the stainless ported 2'' for $329. I've looked at the Keltecs and the Kahrs. From what I hear, keltec's got a lot of support but I want someone to honestly tell me if they're pieces of junk. I want something halfway decent out of the box and I get the impression that people 'settle' for the keltec.
I'm leaning toward the ported taurus 357, but I'd like to know if the .38 +P has decent stopping power if I decided the 357 is too much?

Tackdriver:

The Taurus will serve you well but DO NOT get the ported barrel! On a snubbie it will allow the muzzle blast to torch your face and the sonic boom will make your eardrums burst. The .38 Special Plus P will be fine and don't overlook the 110 Grain Winchester .357 Magnum Hollowpoint. I have one 3" .357 Magnum stoked with the 110 Grain .357 Hollowpoint and I "gar-ron-tee" you that bad boy is smokin' when it exits the chamber! The kick ain't sweet but I know it will get the job done if the moment of truth presents itself----God forbid.

The newest Tauri have a beefed up locking mechanism and extended ejector rod which is important. If you go Taurus, insist on the latest version. The SP101 is probably the best made sunbbie out there and if you can afford the extra $100.00, go for it!

Again, I like Snub-nosed revolvers and would choose it over any other handgun if I were restricted to one choice.

No, I just didn't "settle" for kel-tec and I am sure alot of people don't. they make fine carry guns and are qite reliable in my experience. As for revolvers, you can't go wrong with a Ruger sp101 ;)

Another vote for the SP-101. It is all that you have been told and more. As said before, avoid porting like the plague on a snubbie. And one other thing, I help out at a shop part-time and Taurus quality has taken a big dip. The shop owner used to recommend these to every one. Now he shys away from stocking large #s of these due to defects. I think that they are trying to do too much too fast.

I have a Taurus M605. It is ported. I had the porting done right after the #$@& thing chewed my hand up when I shot it for the first time. The porting helped the controlability a great deal. I can now shoot full house .357 mag rounds through it and be reasonably assured of hitting something. In fact, with a little practice, I have become quite good with it. In a life or death situation, hitting your target is more important than protecting your ears!!!

there is no such thing as owning just one gun!!!

Off my meds (quit smoking), armed to the teeth, and loose on an unsuspecting society!!!

i have a SP101 Weigland "Tame the Beast" combat conversion. it has three hybra-ports on the top of the barrel. i wonder how much shooting of ported firearms some people have done. i would not put ANY part of my body over the top of that barrel while shooting but that applies to the cylinder gap as well. the combination of the ports and a Houge cocobolo monogrip make this one of the most comfortable snubbies i have ever shot. even full house 125 grain Remington SJHP's are easy to handle in this gun. i have tested in the semidarkness and flash from the ports is not much worse than the fireball on the end of the barrel. if you shoot a .357 Magnum without ear plugs and in semidarkness you will be DEAF and BLIND at least for a while ported or not.

Liberty is a well armed lamb contesting the outcome of the vote.
Let he that hath no sword sell his garment and buy one.--And they said. Lord here are two swords. And he said unto them. That is not enough. Luke 22-36,38

riddleofsteel, I intend no offense here so please don't take any. In your signature you quote our Lord in Luke 22: 38. You have misquoted him and I'm sure it done mistakenly. I'm sure you will agree that the entire meaning is changed when you say "That is not enough" instead of "It is enough". Now I don't mean to be some old stick in the mud here, but we do have "antis" lurking about. If they think we are rewriting the Bible to fit our cause, that is not good. Like I stated earlier, please take no offense at this.
