Naked Intruder Dies After Break in at Panhandle Neighbor's Home

PENSACOLA, Fla. (AP) - A naked man covered in blood was shot by his neighbor after he threw a flower pot through the man's living room window and crawled inside. The intruder then died inside the home from other causes.
Sheriff's deputies arrived Friday about 2 a.m. to find the homeowner holding Dwight Mills, 38, at gunpoint in his living room, a few feet from the sofa where the homeowner's youngest daughter had been sleeping.
Mills had been shot once in the back. He died at the scene from either blood loss from cuts inflicted before the shooting, or a drug overdose, according to a preliminary autopsy.
"The gunshot wound did not appear to be fatal," said Escambia County Sheriff's Office spokesman Capt. Joel Mooneyham.
The Sheriff's office did not release the homeowner's name. Charges are not being pursued against the man because he acted to defend himself, his wife and his four daughters, Mooneyham said.
Investigators said that Mills overturned furniture in his own home, barricaded his back door and broke several windows. He then walked across the street and pounded on the front door of his neighbor's home. The homeowner emerged from his garage with a handgun and ordered Mills to leave. Instead, Mills broke the window and entered the home, deputies said.
Dan Moxhan, another neighbor, said Mills was an architect who live alone and was visited occasionally by his estranged wife.
"He just got his divorce papers yesterday," Moxhan said. "He could just as easily have come to my house."
