nagant with "s" proof

someone will direct me to mosinnagant.net but I've already looked there.

Anyway, at the gun store today, I saw a mosin nagant and the proof was a "s" in a cicle (actually a circle with short rays pointint out like a kid would draw a sun).

Anyone have any info on this?

What you are describing is the proof mark from the SAKO rifle factory in Finland.

It is (probably) a finn rework of a MN, or even could be a Finnish MN.

try the finnish section at Tuco's to ID the rifle.

I remembered hearing about a Sako make from some guy at a gun range but this particular rifle didn't say Sako on it(like your pic shows). That is the same proof though.

Anyway it was probably in good+ condition, with matching numbers. It was being sold for $94.
Maybe I'll go get it tomorrow.

Arn't all the Finnish NGs built on Russian receivers? The Finns bought NGs from Russian and captured even more in battle. Over the years most were rebuilt extensively with Finnish parts. ICBW but my understanding was the Finns never actually made NG receivers from scratch. -- Kernel

You're absolutely correct.

I don't know about the Finns purchasing receivers, but when Finland declared independence during the Russian Revolution, the Finns seized quite a few MNs, and immediately set out to modernize and update them.

The same thing happened during the Winter War -- the Finns captured HUGE numbers of MNs, and immediately started sending them back to Sako, VPT, and I belive Tikka for reworking and rebuilding.

Er.... wait, VPT... Maybe that was the Finnish ammo manufacturer...

Dang, now I can't remember.

By the way . . .

. . . what model Finn was it? No matter what, you're probably doing fine at $94.00.
 
not sure what model. Only things I remember were the circle s proof (it didn't say Sako any where on it). SN was in 3000's I recall. There was an arrow emblem but I don't recall if it was in the triangle or star.
I'll go back next week and if he still has it I'll find out more about it.
