Nagant 1895 hunting

Well looks like I cant help myself any longer. Next hunting trip, My dad is gonna be using the shotgun, and ill be carrying a Glock lovers worst nightmare (aka - usually Just my type of gun). This thing challenges me in ways I never thought a firearm could. So how could I hunt rabbit, coyote, and bird with it effectivley? Any ways to lessen that trigger pull? And for longer ranges (25-50 yards) what do my fellow Nagant owners do? I havent had the oppurtunity to go through but 1 box, over about a months time, so I didnt really get any worthwile practice. Also, Is the game warden going to crap his pants over this? Any legal roadblocks in this path to fun.
Im really lost. I can barely hit anything even at 20 yards. And I blame the trigger pull. I had the oppurtunity to shoot a m1911 a few times, and I was putting bullet holes through bullet holes at that distance with one hand. So, I was inspired to buy a Handgun. But - with quite a taste for surplus firearms, I had to get that Nagant 1895, and here I am. Cant say I regret it, but Its really embarassing to miss a can 20 yards away being the marksman I am, and It kind of irritates me when my dad is behind me trying not to laugh.

Pretty novel idea, but guess it doesn't hurt to try unless you try hunting something too big for the round you're gonna be shooting.

Try shooting it single action, the trigger pull isn't too bad at all that way. The Nagant's accuracy can be halfway decent if you've got one with a good bore.

Great bore. But my accuracy seems to ecscape me when It matters the most. I spent months, getting ready to use an Yugo Sks for deer hunting. I sat on the dirt road in a lawn chair. Right in the middle. Flipped a coin to pick which direction I would face, And Sat like a statue for 4 hours. An 8 point came into the road 80 yards ahead and stopped. He looked to his right, he should have looked left. Now let me let you in on a secret. This buck is huge. Ive let a few go to get him. He is so smart, ive caught him on hunting cam video, running after seeing the camera. No flash or sound. Just the box well hidden. I stalked him for a long time, and the oppurtunity is finally there. Ive practiced constanly, round after round up to 150 yards with this rifle, hitting very accuratley up to about 100 yards, never missing. Now, the my chance is there. I prop onto my hand, resting my elbow on my knee. And Im not shaking, but something goes wrong. Right in the heart, and hes starting to limp away. So a few more shots, BANG BANG ... click click...The previous shell didnt eject correctly, and is crushed by the bolt, jamming the rifle! I drop the rifle, Sling my knife out of its holster, and take off. NOW, im mad. found blood and hair, but never a deer. For 2 hours atleast, we searched the thickets. Dead end tracks, blood trails that lead nowhere. And no deer. I scrapped the mud out of my rifle with my knife, feeling all kinds of hate, and anger. I lost fate in that rifle. Just goes to show what expensive scope mounts will get you. I put my original reciver back on yesterday, but ive found a new freind in my Chilean 7mm mauser. The divorce is not going easy.....

The best way to hunt a Nagant 1895 is to put a 12ga slug right through it's cheap-a.. cylinder, bonus points for blowing the barrel clean off.

Oh. Wait. You meant hunting WITH a Nagant?

you really need to get a decent gun...

Best thing you can do when you take a Nagant hunting is leave it in the holster! Other than the hihstorical value, and the uniqueness of the ammo, they are virtually worthless crap. Their most effective use, historically, was shooting political dissidents and those who failed the Supreme Soviet in the back of the neck at point blank range!

Seriously, the guns have poor sights, absolutely unbelieveably bad trigger pulls in DA, and barely better in SA, and the ammo is poorly suited for small game and unsuited for bigger game. Other than as an example of archaic Russian craftsmanship, they have no use that other guns will not do better.

I don't hate them, I just don't think they have any good use, besides paperweights and collectablity as curios. Taking one hunting is one of the least sportsman like things you can do.

Their only attractive features are a low cost, and the fact that until the fall of the USSR, they were extremely rare in the US. The gas sealing function of the revolver and its ammo are technically interesting, but of no practical value, particularly compared to common US revolver cartridges. They are cool as a milsurp collectable, but not much good beyond that.
And someday, maybe, I'll tell you how I really feel!:D

Ive on numerous occasions used it as a paperweight. Like to air out the house so the papers go flying and not only does it weigh them down. But it looks cool as heck sitting on the desk.

A Nagant might be somewhat useful for short-range pest control (I've read of people who like them for shooting rats and snakes when working around their ranch) but at any type of range they're not really good for much. Remember, the Nagant was meant to be an officer's badge of rank and a close range, last resort self-defense weapon. If you want something to hunt with, a used S&W or Ruger .38 Special or .357 Magnum with a 4" or longer barrel would be infinitaley more useful.
