N.Y. City To Sue 30 Gun Makers
by DONNA DE LA CRUZ
Associated Press Writer

NEW YORK (AP) -- The city plans to sue approximately 30 gun manufacturers for negligent marketing and distribution of guns, Mayor Rudolph Giuliani said Monday.

The lawsuit, to be filed in federal court Tuesday, seeks unspecified damages but Corporation Counsel Michael Hess said it could run in the tens of millions of dollars.

''Manufacturers sell guns and have guns distributed in states with very weak gun laws, knowing that these guns will be transported from weak gun law states to strong gun law states,'' Hess said.

The city will also cite deceptive advertising used by gun makers, such as saying that homes with guns are safer than homes without firearms. Hess said there are numerous studies that prove that theory wrong.

Among the defendants will be Smith & Wesson, the nation's largest gunmaker, Hess said. Reached after business hours, the company said no one was available to comment.

Last year, a Brooklyn federal jury found several major handgun makers liable for shootings because of irresponsible marketing. But only three defendants -- American Arms, Inc., Beretta USA, Inc., and Taurus International Manufacturing, Inc. -- were ordered to pay $500,000 to a man who had survived being shot in the head with an illegal handgun. The mixed verdict left both sides claiming victory.

However, U.S. District Court Judge Jack Weinstein did dismiss the cases against gun makers in the shootings of six victims because the jury, despite finding liability, failed to award the victims any damages.

The Giuliani administration's move follows similar lawsuits filed against the firearms industry by cities including New Orleans, Chicago, Miami, Atlanta and Cleveland.

Need help writing a letter to Congress or whomever?
Do you have a great letter or post that you would like to share with us?
Then stop by the NEW 2nd Amendment Activist's 'Copy & Paste' Forum!!!

I think we all need to vote for Bush in the presidential election, just because the Evil Al Gore is so, well, evil, but if I lived in New York I'd vote for a third party candidate for Senator. Hillary, Lazio, Guliani, Petaki, sheesh, they're all the same.

What would happen if S&W backed out of the agreement? After all, exactly what benefit are they getting in return for all of these restrictions that they now have to deal with?

I am so sick of the attempt to bury us under a barage of lawsuits...on the other hand this was to be expected...its all about money...

As for Smith... let this be a lesson to the other manufactures..treachery does not pay

Imbedded in the wording, "guns will be transported from weak gun law states to strong gun law states," do others of you infer that border checks and travelling permits could very well be in our future?

Just paranoid I suppose, but I hope to be prepared.

Then they could infringe two amendments at once. For God's sake keep this to yourself. I'm looking out for the day when we all have to tap dance and juggle to buy bullets.

Ledbetter

The last time someone went berserk, it was a federal building that got blown up; I predict that the NEXT time, it will be a law office. I'd say that I'm amazed it hasn't happened already, but the OK bombing took about 2 years after the fact, didn't it? Don't think it's been quite two years since they started this lawsuit garbage...

Sic semper tyrannis!

Well, after they sue all of our manufacturers out of existance and outlaw the sale of ammunition, it's all over. Easy as that.

Just keep sitting on your hands doing nothing. Write no-one. Fax no-one. Don't join the NRA or GOA.

Anyone up for Sueing Car Makers with me?? I think that is the next logical step in this madness. Just think there is NO Right to keep and drive cars, this is a shoe in! :)

wannabegunowner:
That happened last spring. Three African-American women were involved in a collision in their 25 year old Chevrolet Malibu and were injured. They sued General Motors and were arwaded something outrageous like Three-Billion Dollars. I wonder what I can get from IBM if I get carpel-tunnel syndrome from being on the internet too long.

The car and motorcycle makers should be VERY concerned about all these lawsuits against gun makers. I can justify have a 20 round mag but how do you justify selling a motorcycle that can go 190 MPH? Or a car that will go 160 MPH? And these manufacturers can be accused of marketing their products to drivers with very little experience (16 yrs old). How responsible is that. Even I think that would be a good case.

Wake up car and motorcycle manufacturers...you're next to be sued. That is, unless you help out the gun industry now before these lawsuits get completely out of hand.
