Howdy:
I received a model 57 dash nothing S&W wheel gun. If you pull the hammer back slowly it does not index all the way. If you pull it back quicker it is fine.. What might be the trouble ? I also notice locked up there is a small amount ot side shake to the cylinder but end shake seem's normal.. Thank's for all that reply.. Regards, Hammer It.

Doesn't Come Up.
The hand and/or ratchet is probably worn. Fixed by fitting a new hand. S&W will do it for not much money. Or a REAL gunsmith.

Hammer it, you don't want to just buy a new hand and put it in unless you are an experienced revolver wrench. They are VERY precisely fitted and must be to work right. Send it off.

Hello h. Smith:
I have a very good gunsmith.. I would not attempt such a touchy part to begin with. I also see they make oversized hand's so this lead's me to believe that I am not the only one that has encountered this trouble.. Regards, Hammerdown.

This is a common problem that factory trained people can do very well. Or any good smith that has been trained as a S&W armorer. I am glad you noticed it and are going to have it corrected. I have saved many a hand by peening them, but that is risky. I would advise a new hand if it were mine. I have a very nice '57 that I used as a duty weapon from time to time. They were one of my favorites.
