N frame "snubbie"

Evertime I see one of the N frames with the 3" or 3 1/2 inch barrel I just know I gotta have one and I have finally broken. I know (or think I know) that both the calibers I'm interested in, 44 mag or 45 colt were either custom jobs or custom runs of the gun (Lew Horton?). But thought I would check in too see if anyone has seen any available lately online or other sources or be able to reccomend a smith if I have to go the custom route. Not interested in anything Smith is producing now days and sorry but not interested in a Taurus.

Thanks for any leads, Blue Duck

Call Bizarre Guns in Reno, NV. Phone: 775.685.GUNS.
Hours: Mon. - Sat. 10 AM to 6 PM. Ask for Darren.

He has a few Lew Horton N-Frame snubbies in stock; price range is $600 to $700. As I recall, he has a .41 Mag, .45 Colt, and .44 Mag in the case. Any one of these models would be a good choice.

Of course, you will need a FFL to receive your purchase.

Ehhh...Already have a 640 for shooting the little stuff. Actually found several listed on GunsAmerica for sale (all 3 inch 629's) all in mid $400 range. Of course I'd rather have a blued 3 1/2 inch, but that might be close enough to satisfy my itch.

Thanks, Blue Duck

I bought a 3" 610 a few years ago and LOVED it! :D My only regret was having to sell it, but at least I have visitation rights!

I've posted this elsewhere, but I love big sub guns! I can probably answer many questions you might have.

Short barrels, big bores, lots of power!

This last one, well, it's not quite a snubby, but the barrel is under 4" (3 7/8"), and it's not quite a big bore...

Blue Duck,

Smith (Horton) also produced a small run of three inch 610s. I mention this because I find the 610 has a great advantage compared to 625 (in .45 Colt) and 629 (in .44 magnum): the ability to fire BOTH a very powerful primary round (the 10mm) and a far less expensive – but quite potent – target and plinking loads (the .40 S&W). I realize the .45 Colt can be loaded throughout a wide-range of pressures and .44 Specials can also be fired from the 629; however, neither of these options is as cheap or easy as the .40 S&W in the 610.

And, by the way, the currently marketed 610-3 has a 3.875 inch barrel, which may meet your “N Frame snubbie” needs (is 0.875 of an inch really that big a deal?).

Regards.

I really like the shorter barrel n frames. I have always wanted a 3 1/2 inch model 27 to go along with my 5 inch 27 but all of the model 27's I see for sale are the longer barrel models. When I do see the short barrel 27's for sale the price is set extremely high out of my reach.

I also have a M696 like the M696-1 pictured above, but they are built on the L-frame.

I'm kinda fond of the stubby l'il N's myself. I've got one in every caliber they made 'em in, except .41 Magnum. The 10mm and .45 Colt three-inchers are the hardest to find, as they only made three hundred of the 610's and two hundred of the 625's.

I once heard the Lew Horton ordered a very few M25s in 3 inch back in the 70's. I have never seen one, but it would definately be high on my want list if they do indeed exist.
