My weekend - Newbies at the range and more - Long

It's now Monday evening. I feel like I've done nothing but go shooting for the past 3 days. Here's how the past 3 days went.
Well, my wife and I took our friends to the range on Saturday morning. Everything went perfectly. After a safety lesson, we went over the operation of the .22 revolver. Then I fired one cylinder through it so that they would know what to expect. Then each newbie would get to fire a cylinder. They were too intent on shooting to count the number of rounds, and I would constantly watch them, especially for jerking/flinching on the "7th" round. They did very well. After a couple of cylinders each, I asked if they wanted to go to a larger round (.38 special) Both were having a great time and were excited to try a little bigger. At every stage, they were told that they could stop at any time if they didn't like that caliber or gun, or for whatever reason. Once again, operation of gun, then I'd fire a cylinder. Again, they both did great. Repeat process with 9mm. So far, all shooting done at approx 10 yrds on paper. Now was time to put up some clay pigeons on the dirt bank. Put out 6 row of 3 to 6 pigeons each. Made a game of it. They got to choose which gun they wanted to shoot. Each newbie got 2 shots to hit a pigeon. If they did hit it, they got to keep shooting until they missed 2 shots, or "killed" 5 pigeons in a row. They complained that I wasn't doing any shooting, so I took my turns as well, but would only shoot once. At one point, he hit 5 in a row and she took 4 in a row, both using .38 special. We stayed out about an hour longer than expected/planned on, but they REALLY didn't want to stop. Then, since they were both drooling over the scoped AR-15, I let them both run a 30 rd magazine through it. Then I finally called it quits, with the promise that we could go again another day.
After they drove away, my wife and I went to my favorite FFL, just for grins. I showed her the Glock-30 that I was looking at, and she promptly reminded me that SHE was looking at it the last time we were there. So, we went home with my wifes new Glock, but she promised that I could use it now and then too. :) It was already 1/2 an hour after the FFL's closing time when we got the G30, so we couldn't used their range. By the time that we could have made it to the next range, it would have been dard. So, of course we had to go try her new pistol on Sunday. (Oh darn! :) )
After getting back home Sunday, there was a message on our answering maching from my brother, who lives 4 1/2 hours away, asking me to call him. I did. He said that he was going to be in town on Monday, and said that he'd like to go shooting Monday afternoon. OK...here I go again. A few hundred more rounds and I'm about to be tired of shooting! Well, at least for a couple of days. :)
Hope everyone had as good of a weekend as I did.

All in all, I think we have a couple of new folks interested in the sport.

Bill, you did good!!!

I've got a range trip scheduled for my father-in-law tomorrow. To reduce any testosterone-induced learning difficulties, my wife will be doing an overview of Col. Cooper's laws prior to the trip :)

Yeah! I went through 2 boxes of clays with 3 nephews (11,12&16)on Sunday afternoon, 2 boxes of .380's and a couple of boxes of .357's.
But it's a good tired. :)

Bill,

Sounds like a dream weekend! Glad you introduced some newbies to the sport.

Sounds like my weekend! Saturday I took two co-workers (one was a newbe, so I did my good deed for the cause too) to an all day Garand/Highpower clinic-CMP shoot. The best part was *I* got to shoot and somebody else did the coaching for me. Plus they both got packets to order Garands.
Sunday it was off to another club for for an "IPSC rifle" steel match. Shot with an AR and HK91. They also had a real neat hybrid IPSC/IDPA course with steel plates that started target frame bad guy "swingers" that would have to be double tapped as they swung out from behind the hostage targets.
Lots of subguns racing on the steelplate bowling pin range. Spring is here ;)
What a turnout they had there. Even had some "crossover" Cowboy shooters who showed up.

You guys are killing me.

I've got a newborn at home and according to my best guess I'm about 1,0243 dirty diapers away from a range day.

Next time you are out fire a box for those less fortunate. :(

To all that have helped introduce new people to the shooting sports, my hat is off to you.

I live in a rural secluded heavily wooded area, and have a range built on my property. My buddy and I have a goal to work with 4-5 people that have never fired a gun, and have a little interest. We instruct them as to safety first, then we have them shoot .22 rimfire and a 30-30 NEF single shot centerfire. The smiles on the faces tell it all. We then ask if anyone wants to shoot a 9mm semiauto handgun. Most will try, and the smiles again come out.

We have had several go on to be happy 1st time gunowners, and several have started hunting.

I feel that this is one way to beat back the anti-gun propaganda that has overtaken public opinion. We can all do this ONE PERSON AT A TIME. It makes my day when I hear of others introducing people to the shooting sports and possible gun ownership.

IT'S NOT ABOUT GUNS-IT'S ABOUT FREEDOM----CHAINSAW

I don't get why everyone starts with the .22
I start with the AR-15. its more fun that way. Not to mention, the operation is a lot easier.and you can go 10,20,30 or 40 rds between changing mags.

I did mine good deed of the weekend. church friend is looking to get a shotgun. I don't have a shotgun, but he has been talking about how he wants to go shooting. and also how I don't need "assualt rifles" so we took my ARs out and he had a ball. i have done good. I am at 5 and counting as chainsaw said 1 person at a time each at their own pace. with the AR, that pace is as fast as they can pull the trigger.
