My WASR10 has been in hiding...

Until a few weeks ago, I had not shot my wasr 10 for probably anywhere from 1-3 years.
I pulled it out, and notices a little bit of rust here and there on the outside of the rifle. the gas tube, and internals looked ok...
When I shot it, everything was fine.
My question is this.... Is it a problem there is some rust on the outside? Like I said, it shot fine, but just didn't like the rust factor. How can I get it off/prevent future rusting?
with the 2-3000 rounds that have been put in through this rifle, only cleaned it good a few times... never really brushed the barrel, so I'm not sure how much copper fouling has been inserted. Anyways, I want to reclean this, and get it back on track for my liking, As I will be adding an AR and Ak74 this summer.
Thanks for your input!

Any parkarized or blued gun that you leave untended for years without some sort of protective coating on it is going to rust. I would just count it lesson learned and make sure to oil and clean everything really well before putting it back up again. :o

I keep a couple bottles of Break-Free LP (not CLP), which is their Lubricant and Preservative compound. A thin coating of that on all the metal surfaces and it should be safe to store, assuming you store it in a dry enough place. I try to make sure and take all my guns that have been in "storage" out once a year and clean/re-lube before putting them away again.

Well I lived in Arizona for 10 years... never had to even think about it. Now I'm in Indiana...
Lubing the outside of the gun never really seemed necessary to me, but I guess I need to now.

Should the outside be lubed even if i plan on using it in a few months?
