My unlucky day!

:(My pride and joy was destroyed today :(, and I and my wife are lucky to be alive. We were stopped at a red light when we were rearended by a 27,000 pound trash truck.
My loss was my beloved 1996 Nissan Pickup. It did its job and gave it life to protect my wife and myself. It was in pristine condition and had only 40k. I had just given her a new set of feet (tires), and spent over $75 on a profesional headlight to taillight detail. My wife has a difficult time comprehending the loss I feel, so I thought I'd share here with a group of people who have a better chance of understanding.
To put it in perspective, it was an extended cab truck, the back is nothing but a mangled mess all the way up to my toolbox. Overall the truck is about 4 feet shorter, and bent at about a 20 degree angle. The driver of the trash truck said he was doing 45mph and never hit the brakes. We were knocked across 2 lanes and wound up in the front lawn of a nearby church (coincidence?). Both seats are destroyed where they absorbed the instant acceleration of the impact. I have already composed a letter to Nissan corp., thanking them for engineering such a fine vehicle. The cop upon looking at the damage could not believe that the truck had held up, and with the exception of my separated left shoulder, my wife and I walked away essentially unscathed.
I will thank God tonight for his arms protecting us.
If I had a digital camera I'd post a picture of what's left, you'd be amazed.

I am very glad that you and your wife escaped with your lives. I do believe that the Lord was watching over you and yours. Post the pictures.

I am very glad you and your wife are able to walk away. Take care of that shoulder.
It's a sad thing to lose a good pickup! Kinda' like losing a good horse or dog.

I'm very happy to hear that you are able to feel so sad. :) :(

It sounds like it could have been a WHOLE lot worse. You and your bride are lucky to be alive. Thanks be to the deity of your choice and to those Japanese engineers.

My heartfelt condolences on the loss of your truck. (Most women just can't fathom the nature of the relationship between a man and his wheels)

OTOH, Glad to hear you got out relatively unscathed!

My vehicles have been, for the most part, just like my guns. After they are gone (traded, sold) I wish for them back! I can feel your loss. Sorry about the shoulder, hope it is well soon, and I am glad you and the Mrs are generally ok.

Thank Goodness your both OK. I, too, have lost loved-ones like that. I know the damage a trash truck can do. (10 years on them).

Glad y'all came out so well. You two need to be extra nice to each other for a while. This one probably won't go away for some time.

Glad you're both alright.

I feel your pain, though. I used to have a little Subaru. Not as cool-looking as a truck, but it was the best snow/ice vehicle I've ever had (including 5 4WD trucks/Broncos).

When it was totalled, my mom's in one ambulance, my son's in the other. What do I do? I turn around to look at my car, see the front end is pretty smashed, but think it might be repairable....till I look down and see four different kinds of (vehicle)fluid running down the street. I knew I'd never see my little Subaru again. *sniffle* *sniffle* :( My sympathies.

I know how you feel. Not the Loss of the car. (I have never been that attached to one.) but the "God I am lucky to be alive" feeling. Couple years ago I was in a 1995 Ford Taurus and had to stop on the interstate. Had something to do with the 3 mile backup cuased by some stupid construction. Well the guy behind me was not paying attention and never even slowed down. He was driving an extended Cab Long Bed F-150 Pickup, and he was doing about 75MPH. My Taurus got turned into an Escort really quick. The spare tire ended up in the back seat and the engine Block was cracked Right up the middle from the force of the impact. THe worst part was the 5k worth of computer parts that was in the trun and got turned into so much Silicon dust. I think that is what upset me the way losing your truck upset you :) =)
I was lucky and got away without so much as a sore neck. When the Insurance agent saw the car he just laughed and said they would cut me a check. I still have pictures of the car and the shape it was in, and how lucky I was. And of course my current car is another Ford Taurus. =)

The only thing that matters is that you and your wife walked away from it. You were so lucky!!

A few years back, my wife and daughter were driving along a major country road at about 60 mph in her (near new) Hyundai Sports coupe. A LWB LandCruiser came out of a dirt road on her left at 50 mph and T-boned her, just a foot behind the passenger's seat, where my daughter was sitting. (The driver said later he didn't even know he was near a major road.)

It tore the rear end completely off the Hyundai, but my wife was able to keep it on the road and steer to a safe stop.

The LandCruiser rolled several times. Di had a couple of cracked ribs, but essentially, everyone was unhurt by the incident.

It was not long after my mother-in-law (whom I loved as my own mother) had died. I'm convinced she was watching that day and looking after her daughter and granddaughter.

I wrote to Hyundai and gave them my heartfelt thanks.

You are truly blessed to come out of such a violent accident with (as of now) no major injuries.
I'd advise you to err on the side of cautionm, however:
In 1994, I was crossing an intersection just after the light had turned green, when iwa broadsided by another vehicle doing 45-50 mph.
Good samaritan helped me out of the cab of my truck, and I was not injured to the eye, but ended up having 2 back surgeries over the course of 18 months. These were directly linked to the accident. I went from being able to benchpress #325 to not being able to load a #50 sack of dog food in the shopping cart.
Don't sign anything until you are sure you and your wife are ok...sometimes injuries take time to make themselves known.
Take Care!

VERY sore this morning. A plug for ALLSTATE who is starting to work towards resolution already. We are lucky and the outpouring of understanding has given me a definant warm fuzzy. The natural closeness of our firearms community is a wonderfull thing. Thanks for all the support.
