My survey of S&W pistols....

To be fair- These are the S&W pistols I have owned; Two 4506's- Big, durable, points easily, very reliable. Two 457's- Compact, lightweight, very reliable. A 5906 for a short time- heavy, durable, and very reliable. A 4006- Heavy, durable, and once again very reliable. Do to the political nature of things at the moment I traded away my last Smith. It's sad because S&W makes a good product. Just my thoughts, J. Parker

I must say that I'm rather surprised by all of these S&W surveys -- three in two days!

I personally own over a dozen S&W semiauto pistols (I don't own any of their revolvers). They were all purchased new ranging in time from the early 1980's until this year. I have found all of them to be reliable & accurate. I own more S&W products than all other guns combined. If I didn't consider them to be the best, I would not own so many of them.

For those that want to share more of their thoughts, comments & ideas with regard to Smith & Wesson products, come join other S&W owners at the Smith & Wesson Firearms Enthusiast's Web Board, which is in no way affiliated with the Smith & Wesson Company of Springfeild, MA.

My S&W 4006 is my favorite carry gun in jacket weather.. It just pints very naturally for me and therefore improved accuracy even when I am practicing in low light/night conditions.. I also have never yet had a jam with it regardless except I have had stovepipe with American ammunition but it was simply the ammo is crappy and loaded too "cold"

I respect Fud's view on S&W semi-autos and I agree that most people in the surveys gave them a good rating. I will also concede that the majority of S&W autoloaders are at least decent quality.

But, here is my stance. The 4-digit S&W models tend to be close in price to Sigs. Yet, every S&W autoloader I have shot has had a very poor SA trigger and so-so accuracy. A Sig comes with a good SA trigger (in most cases) and excellent accuracy out of the box. Even Glocks have a lighter trigger than most Smiths. And lemons aside, the Sig is more reliable. In my experience, even good S&W's need to be babied (cleaned and oiled thouroughly to avoid malfunctions). Glocks and Sigs are less tempermental IMO. I just don't get the point of paying a lot of money for a product that requires gunsmithing (trigger work) to get it to perform at a high level. IMO, Sigs and Glocks are better performers out of the box. Maybe its just a "buy American" thing? For example consider cars/trucks: IMO, this "buy American" attitude is the ONLY reason GM is still in business-- as most of their vehicles have horrible reliability history since 1990--and poor quality control to go along with it. No one in their right mind would by a post 1990 GM in the hopes of getting a quality vehicle.

Like the old "5 Screw" 17 I have but beyond that there gonna have to turn their operation over to Walther before I do business with them again.

Quantum; Wait just one minute here..I have a '93 GMC Sierra 4x4 extra-cab I love dearly. It's been trouble free. I bet you got one of them Beemers.. :) :) Best, J. Parker

No disrespect intended--I am sure you have a nice GM. ;) No, I don't do Beemers (I prefer Lexus).

Here is why I mentioned GM: I've had 4 and all 4 were lemons and broke down prematurely and consistently (3 Cads, 1 Chevy). Mostly electrical/computer problems--but one Caddy had a very bad engine :(. After those headaches I bought Consumer Reports and found out it just wasn't me who had nightmares with GM-- in fact GM was rated poor in reliability and very low in quality. Needless to say I haven't bought GM since and what I have now has never given me any major problems.

Quantum; Hell, I don't blame you. Oddly enough, yesterday my wifes '93 Intrepid just stopped running. Great. Maybe I'll look into those used Lexus's they advertise on tv. My wifes yellin' at me, gotta go! Best, J. Parker

I don't like any S&W. I am with the boycott. If you live in Massachusetts you know what I mean.

If I was to P/U a revolver, S&W would be my first choice.....
