My spotting scope is all sticky,,,
I left it stored on it's tripod in an non air conditioned room for a year.

It seems that the heat or maybe the humidity,,,
Has caused a breakdown of the rubber outer coating.

Now it's almost liquid (gel like pliable),,,
And as tacky as a post-it note.

It's not a great big deal,,,
The scope only cost me $39.95 at Wal Mart,,,
But you would think that something with the Remington name on it would be better.

I've never had anything plastic do this before,,,
I'm just curious as to why this happened.

I actually had the buttpad on a Remington 870 do something similar. Almost like it was slowly turning to goo.

This was quite a few years back and this shotgun was stored in a climate controlled area.
 
Ummmm, yeeaahhhh... I don't trust Remington safeties either...

Toss it and get better.
I recommend the Celestron C70.
 
There's no saving the goo.
You can attempt to find a way to strip the nastiness and salvage what's under it.

...But I'd toss it and find a replacement.
 
"Rubber" overmolded?" And you paid $40?
Well,there are some good elastomers.(rubbery plastics). Some contain rubber,or silicone.

But there is some weight of material that goes into rubber armoring something.

Generally the price of engineering resins might start about where the price of beef starts. Good beef.

Do you suppose whoever puts that Remington sticker on there will pay $8 or $10 just for the plastic pellets to overmold your scope?

Leica might,if you pay $1500 for the scope.

That's why I quit eating smoked oysters. I get nervous about that "Product of...." label.

Although,if you pay enough money for a product so the offshore folks take you serious,you can get some decent stuff.

You could try talcum powder.Actually,that is an additive for plastics. 30% talcum fill will give 30% less mold shrinkage.

But the glass is still working properly.

So I used half a roll of electricians tape and covered the outside surface.

I've had a 100.00 spotting scope(BSA) do this, a BSA red dot and a Bass Pro fishing reel.
The spotting scope broke inside and BSA said old model, tough. Red dot wasn't any good the day I bought it. I was able to clean the goo off the Reel with B 12 Chem tool, the reel is made of some type plastic that the B 12 didn't melt. I wish they'd leave this crap off stuff.
