My son is moving to Illinois.

Even though all of Illinois is not Chicago, they still make you jump through hoops to legally own firearms. Have him research the Illinois FOID card.

Needs to get FOID

Technically for him to possess any firearm in IL he will have to have a FOID. I don't know if you can get one before you are officially an IL resident. You can't even buy ammo in IL without a FOID. It's not hard to get a FOID and they do have to be renewed every few years.

Good Luck

While you need a FOID card to possess firearms or buy ammo in Illinois, the card is not tied to specific firearms. Your son should just safely store his firearms while he procures his FOID card, then he is good to go. Illinois has problems but there is no firearm registration or other means for the authorities to know how many and what specific guns an individual has.

He has 60 days after establishing Illinois residency (meaning getting an IL ID) to get his FOID. Ironically if he doesn't become a resident he is not required to have a FOID.

No issues with any of those guns anywhere in the state, Chicago included.

(430 ILCS 65/2) Sec. 2 (d)
Any person who becomes a resident of this State, who is not otherwise prohibited from obtaining, possessing, or using a firearm or firearm ammunition, shall not be required to have a Firearm Owner's Identification Card to possess firearms or firearms ammunition until 60 calendar days after he or she obtains an Illinois driver's license or Illinois Identification Card.

Best to apply the day he gets his ID, they are supposed to issue a FOID no later than 30 days after applying but they can get slow!

eta: it's a simple process, not a very long form and very similar to a 4473. He can do it online too. $10 good for 10 years.
