My S&W M19-4 is great!

OK. I finally got a chance to shoot this M19-4, nickel and 6" barrel revolver. The first thing I noted was the revolver seemed to have been sitting for a long time without being cleaned or lubed. I sprayed the action out with Tetra and then sprayed Remington oil inside and out. Everything got wiped down and then I dryfired the revolver. Smooth. The action has benefitted from an expert touch. No screws were buggered or even a scratch anywhere from a cheap screwdriver. I checked everything over and decided it would be time to load up. This example has a Partridge front blade and serrated semi-rib with serrated and adjustable rear sight. The sight picture is good. The wide target hammer was eased back. I gently touched the serrated trigger and squeezed. The action responded to a light single action squeeze. The targets I used were aluminum cans. I hit what I wanted with each pull. I tried some double action shots and I was impressed! I actually hit the aluminum can in the air once. When I was through, I gathered up my targets and dropped them off for recycle. I found the ancient Pachmayr Presentation grip to be in rough condition. I replaced it with new Pachmayr Gripper rubber grips. I completely cleaned, Flitzed and hand buffed the nickel while I had the grips off. I really like S&W K frame 357 Magnums. This is a great example of a P&Rd, craftsman assembled, tuned action S&W! I found this nice revolver at www.coalcreekarmory.com Anybody else find the M19/M66 to be the greatest 357 Magnum? (I know, I have N frames too!)

Your M19!

SirWilliam:

1)Congratulations in acquiring a neat S&W m19-4!

2)I have always liked the m19/M66 myself! These are my favorite K-frame .357 magnum revolvers! However, I have another favorite medium frame revolver, which is the Ruger Security Six, with the heavy barrel! Both of these are fine six guns! The Smith's have the better trigger(But, the Security Six, is the stronger gun!)but, they both have their individual advantages and disadvantages! I have always found the S&W M19/M66 to be beautiful revolvers!

3)You have been acquiring some nice guns lately! Keep up the good work!

I have owned a few Rugers in double action and single action forms. I like the Ruger Bisley Vaqueros. The Security Six I had would not reset the trigger in fast double action shooting. I have been a Colt and S&W fan since. The classic styling of the M19/M66 is slim and stylish. My MKIII Colts seem heavy and oversized comparatively. The only other slim and stylish 357 Magnum I have seen was a Dan Wesson. My friend has a DW Pistol Pack I would like to buy. His revolver doesn't come near this M19s trigger though.

Has it had an action job that you can verify?

Reason I ask is my 19-4 Nickel 6 inch has had the sweetest out of the box action you could want from day 1.

Both of my other (currently I only have 3 19's) 19's, a 19-3 4" blue and a 19-4 4" Nickel also have very slick actions, with the Nickel 19-4 being just a tad slicker.

How do you like the sights? Personally I find the bright silver of the nickel contrasted with the black rear sights to be next to perfect. Quick to aquire and the color of the front sight helps fix my attention to it.

The action is far smoother and lighter than other S&Ws I have. The only other revolver I have with as responsive an action is a Hawes single action from my fast draw days. I would believe the action has been gone through on this M19. I do like the sights. I will probably have the rear sight notch widened a little. I like a little more daylight in my sight picture.

My father has a Model 19. He's owned it for years. It is soooooooo smooth. It has been shot so much that the action has worn where when cocked, it will "push off" meaning you can just push on the hammer without touching the trigger and the hammer will fall.

It is still safe, as the safety features still work, but we are going to replace the affected parts anyway.

Yes the smith model 19 in a 6 inch is also my favorite 357,it is a fine hunting and target weapon, mine is deadly out past 100 yds.

I think the 4" 19 is the BEST 357 ever made, and I have owned just about everything else made. I love mine. My 'shooter' 19 has well over 40K rounds through it, still shoots good. The only Smith I like better is the 4" 15, it seems to have a little better balance, a little lighter weight, and is just perfect for the caliber. To me the 15 is the ultimate revolver, the 19 is the ultimate 357.

Slick as they are, they still benefit from an action job. Done right and shot heavily they are unbelievable, make a Python feel like a rusty pair of pliers.

I don't think much of the 66. I don't like stainless guns and it goes downhill from there LOL.

I have a Model 19-3 that I trust my life to every night. I use it as a over-built .38 loaded with mid-velocity SWC's at around 800fps. Mine too has a set of the Grippers, they make great duty grips, even in wet weather. This gun has the smoothest action I have ever used on any handgun. I bought it used for $200 , a steal, so I don't know if it has had an action job. If not, they need to build them like this again. 1" groups at 25yds is a nice feeling for the one doing the shooting, a bad thing for the one trying to kill you. I think you'll have a nice happy life with your 19!!!!
