My S & W Ignoramnitude

Scenario:

I see in my local classified ads an ad which reads, "9MM pistol. 2 15 rnd magazines & holster. $300." So I call the guy, leave a message. He calls back, but I cannot understand his return message. Thus, I need your help.

What I could decipher is something like "Bryan Co Arms ... Smith and Wesson ... 59 ... price has gone down to $200."

This is probably a really dumb question but you guys are usually very patient with newbies.

So what is this gun?

S&W has a 9mm semi-auto which has pre-ban 15 round hi cap clips called the 5906. Could that be it?

The price sounds cheap, though, unless it is in rough shape. New 5906's are around 500. Hi caps go for around 40.

My other thought is that "Bryan Co Arms" could be Jennings-Bryco Arms, which makes some really cheap and very mediocre quality guns. Do not buy them.

I second that motion. Avoid Bryco. If a S$W has 15 round mags, it is probably preban and pre-sellout so you can buy it without the guilt.

You're probably right -- does Jennings Bryco copy S&W? Maybe he was saying that it was a Smith lookalike or something.

Whatever the case, I'd agree, a $200 gun is probably junk. Thanks for the info.

OTOH, I have a friend who put a G19 on layaway. It is used, but he said that if I take over the payments (approx $300 left) that the gun is mine. Hopefully this will be my next firearm!

There isn't a new Bryco that retails for over $180 so I definately wouldn't buy a used one for $200.

It may be a S&W Model 59. I think this was S&Ws first high-capacity 9mm that came out back in the early 1970's (roughly). I bought one back then and still have it. It is a reliable gun. It has an alloy frame and a rear sight that is screw adjustable for windage. I'm not really sure what they changed with the subsequent models (5906, etc.). They look about the same to me. If you can get a decent Model 59 for $200, that sounds like a good deal, especially with the full-capacity magazines.

Garbled phone message? Call him back. The guys' NAME might be Brian Collins or something (distorted to Bryan Co Arms?). The S&W Model 59 was first generation hi-cap 9mm, later models like the 5906 are more reliable. A 5906 with a pair of hi-caps and a holster is not bad for $200.

Not bad? I paid $450 for my 5906. Did I get screwed? The gun was in fine shape and has been completely reliable so I am happy with my purchase but hearing $200 makes me wonder now about the price I paid. I also purchased 3 hi cap mags for $33 a piece so I have a little over $600 in the gun counting 3 extra mags and the holster (which was also purchased seperately).

Ozark9mm,
The gun in the paper may be an old beat-up gun with functioning problems. I wouldn't judge your purchase against it until you found out more information. $33 a piece for full capacity 5906 mags is a good price. I usually see them for around $45.

IF the S&w Model 59 is in very good shape it would be an excellent buy with the magazines and holster included. You may have to have a good gunsmith polish the feed ramp to get reliable feeding with hollow points, but it ought to function quite well with 9mm hard ball.
