My Review of The Firing Line

Guys, check out my review of the firing line at the following URL:

This Epinions is a great site and I've written several gun-related articles. There are a few other gun folks on there too. Maybe we'll get some new members? Take care,

My own opinion is forming...
Okay - First of all - Personal attacks are not allowed here. Period. IF they happen the person making the attack is asked to change his post to with draw the attack ot the post is deleted and the offender is banned. So these kids flame at there own risk.
Second - Gale passed away - but we have a lot of other people here at that level... People from Every Level in and out of the industry, in politics, Law Enforcement, Military, and all areas... Good Solid people.

Yeah... What George said. I can think of a bunch of people that are well known within the industry that post here.

I've been with the Firing Line for a about 8 months now. The only complaint I have is the way people don't read what your questions are when your trying to gain knowledge in a certain area. There is only one person out of the hundreds of people that have responded to various posts I've place that gets on my nerves. One Topic you can't ever bring up is Mini 14's without getting so many unwanted responses. I love the Firing line and I can say that I have been Pursuaded by some very Intelligent people on gun purchases and decision making. This site Is Excellent and the Moderators are very Interesting Commentators.

As long as I've been a member here, I find this forum much more mature than the other firearm related forums. I've learned a lot and also helped some. Great job Firing Line staff for keeping this place clean and sane.

I do have one complaint. There seems to be a time warp operating within this board. I stop by for a quick read, and suddenly it's 2 hours later, and I can't figure out where the time went.

Teach a kid to shoot.
It annoys the antis.

Dunno - I haven't been flamed - but then my opinions/postings are pretty innocuous.

Seemed to be a pretty fair review to me. (Other than I haven't been flamed.)

Said there were knowledgeable folks here, willing to share experience and knowledge. I think so.

Easy to use. I think so.

Helpful. I think so.

Eric--- It must be a strange occurance here in the Hoosier state! I find the same problem as you!

No complaints here, though.

quote:
The knowledge base of the various members is spotty. There are some authoritative members who have encyclopedic knowledge of some area of firearms and there are new members who barely have any knowledge at all. The trouble is, for the reader to discern which is which. If you are knowledgeable about firearms you will quickly catch on to who knows what they're talking about, but if you are a newbie you can be misled by some who have an engaging style of writing.[/quote]

Well, this may be a 'quibble', but I wouldn't describe the knowledge base as 'spotty' ... I think it trivializes the depth here. Besides, this is a web 'conversation' ... you can put a question on TFL, and see people debate the issue. Even though I was quite new to firearms less than 2 years ago, it was pretty clear who knew what they were talking about. TFL mirrors our day-to-day experiences in life ... you ask a few people for opinions, you compare them, you judge their relative credibility, and it helps you arrive at better decisions.

IMHO, TFL deserves 5 stars for the most cordial, experienced voices on the 'net with regards to firearms and the RKBA. TFL has been the best learning resource I've ever encountered, bar none. I regard it as an interactive firearms encyclopedia.

As far as being a fairly open forum, I think TFL is great! No, it is not perfect. Open forums are never perfect, but this allows people to express their views and opinions - and to allow for disagreements. As far as BigG's review of people getting flamed, I disagree. There are some condenscending responses once in a while, but I think many of these are meant to be tongue and cheek, but some not. The moderators take care of the outright flames.

I am troubled in two areas, but these are the product of the posters. First, there are the very vague topics that can't be discerned without opening them and reading. On a slow night, it can be a little maddening...and my dinner gets cold. The second has to do with posted topics that have nothing to do with firearms in any way, but the poster wants to share something s/he finds funny or wants information on something like what a good price would be for a vehicle. I get sucked into reading these as well and then my dinner gets colder.

TFL is my second home. It's great strength, IMO, is that you can wander off onto only vaguely gun-related topics in General Discussion, which still relate to the lifestyle we all enjoy and want to preserve.

As for advice ... well, Caveat emptor.

I, for one, would hate to see TFL change and lose its warmth, spontaneity and tolerance.

Hey, it's free advice. You get what you pay for.

I will say, though, that I know what these guys are talking about. Topics someobody new shouldn't bring up unless he's willing to take some heat include compromise with antis on any issue and any handgun that costs less than $300 unless it's a police trade-in revolver. That sort of gap is unavoidable if you want to ask advice of knowledgeable people--the only people who become knowledgeable about handguns, for instance, are the ones who think a handgun is important enough to spend a fortune and a lot of time finding the right one.

A legitimate complaint, however, is the tendency to ignore the qualifications put forth in questions about choice of equipment. If you post that you've narrowed it down to a Glock 9mm and ask if you should get a 17 or a 19, at least half the responses will be people telling you you're crazy to be buying a Glock and their Sig or 1911 has gone 80,000 rounds without a misfire. If you you post about a 1911 or a Sig, then the other half want to know why in the world you don't just buy a Glock. ;)
But hey, all the most lovable families have quirks...
