My review of the CZ 1911A1

My review of the CZ 1911A1 *Now with Range report

This is my initial review of the new CZ 1911A1.

First opinion when I held the CZ 1911 was that it's a solid well fit pistol. It comes drenched in oil inside and out so I'd suggest doing a complete tear down before heading to the range so you can clean off the oil and re-lube. The fit of the parts are second to none like the very positive thumb safety, barrel bushing, slide stop, mag release and very well staked plunger tube. The slide to frame fit has a very tiny amount of play up front with zero play in the back.

As far as the trigger goes, it's very crisp with little take up and is right at 5lbs according to my gauge. There was extra time taken to fit certain parts like the firing pin stop, thumb safety, extractor and trigger. The smooth faced trigger is aluminum with an overtravel screw. I might change this out later because of personal preferences, but there is no reason to change it out otherwise.

The only parts I can see that are cast/mim is the grip safety and magazine catch. There are a few faint tool marks on some parts, but nothing that sticks out unless you're looking very close and nothing that would cause an issue. Most parts are very smooth like the barrel with it's mirror like crown and feed ramp.

I hope the pictures below can shed more light on the quality of the parts although it's not my best picture quality. Most parts still have oil and some fuzz on them. I'll be doing a follow-up review as soon as I get back from the range this week.

Range Report
I shot the CZ 1911A1 today and not one single malfunction. Ammo used was 200rds. of 230gr. FMJ consisting of Federal and American Eagle and 10rds each of 230gr. HST, PDX-1 and Remington UMC HP. Magazines consisted of six 7rd. Check-Mates, four 8rd. Chip McCormicks and three 8rd. KimPro Tac mags.

It was very comfortable to shoot although I did have a nice red mark on my hand from the GI grip safety, but that happens with every GI 1911 I shoot. I'll probably throw the Pachmayr grip safety I have on there next time I shoot it. Accuracy was excellent with the best grouping being 2" at 15 yards.

All around it's one of the best 1911s I've owned or shot to date. I'd actually put it in second place right behind my Valor.

So far I'm pretty impressed with it. The Hogues are stock and so far I don't plan on changing anything out. If I do it would be a flat MSH and long trigger due to my hand size and personal preference.

Did you ever get it back together?

Oh, of course. The second gun I owned was a Springfield Armory MilSpec, I've owned 14 1911s now so tearing them down and installing parts on them ever since gives me a little knowledge on what I'm doing. ;) A few years ago I built one from various parts for a friend and let me tell you that hand fitting the slide and frame is quite time consuming.

The original CBOBs had cast parts.
Yep, my 2008 version has a cast frame and other cast parts. Good gun.

I bought an untampered-with Norinco a while back because I wanted the arched mainspring housing, etc. Now, I'm thinking about the CZ. The problem is I've got an order in on a custom 1911 and really like the Dan Wesson Valkyrie. I sure have more "wants" than dollars right now. :)

Very nice! I'm not overly impressed with all the new 1911's, but this one is different. I really like the lack of front cocking serrations, the arched mainspring housing, the GI safety, and roll marks, instead of etching. Congratulations!

Anxious to read your range-report and how she shoots...
It's a real nice looking pistola... Have a couple DWs, great 1911 shoots!
Thanks for the pics.

Congrats... sounds like a sweet shootin' pistola... Enjoy!

It's now my second favorite. I know I'll get the groups consistently 2" or less once I put the Pachmayr grip safety on and the web of my hand isn't being dug into. ;)

Does the serial number indicate it's the 39th production gun?
The "illustrations" (don't know if they're photographs) that accompanied the introduction show short frame tangs, similar to what is seen on Remington Rands and other non-Colts.
A production gun on youtube showed Colt-length tangs, but #39 has the short; anyone seen any other examples in the flesh, to determine which spec is definitive?

EDIT: OK, I can't find it, so I'll say the pictures that I saw "appeared to show" a new CZ 1911A1 with longer, Colt-style tangs, until I can find the pics.
