My rattletrap revolver

fix

New member
Yesterday I noticed that the chambers on my S&W 681 seem a little loose. Remington UMC ammo has always rattled around a bit, but the cases usually expand enough to require at least a little help from the ejector. 2 of the cases fell clear with no assistance from the ejector at all yesterday. Was this a case of bad ammo, or is it time for a new cylinder?

Sounds like those chambers might be smoothing up with use. Of it could be different brass. Not only not to worry, that is actually ideal.

Thanks all. The gun probably has over 20,000 rounds through it (don't have a book on it to tell for sure). I was just a little nervous about it I guess.

fix......that's enough mileage to be really watchin a few things. Specially with a stainless gun.
Timing. Cylinder side shake. Hole in recoil plate for rear cylinder latch still round. Front cylinder latch (in barrel lug) still engaging properly. Lateral looseness of cylinder. Windows in frame for cylinder lock and hand. etc etc.

Echo what CRSam said and add: check the barrel to cylinder gap as the cylinder wears against the face of the crane tube and moves closer to the barrel. If you have a tight gap and loose end shake (more than about .003") it can be easily fixed by adding a washer or peening the crane tube end.

Perfectly normal, but a micrometer or caliber will tell you if you have any real problems brewing.

Of course, that's just my monumental anti-S&W bias showing again, a bias to such depth that I only own 12 of them...

That's yet another example of S&W junk. Anybody that even considers buying one of there old POS should have their head examined.

DON"T BUY OLD S&W's FOLKS!!!

leave them for me
