My "new" test medium for SD rounds.

Just thought I would share this for fun. Dont know how "legal" or expensive this might be but... can't imagine it would be more expensive than buying a rack of ribs.

I was getting ready to test out my first box of Federal Hydra-shok and realized I had nothing to shoot at. In desperation used a quart of old paint. *BIODEGRADABLE* of course. The paint was very old, and very congealed. It was a giant ball of semi gelatinous muck. I thought that at a minimum it might be a good stand in for a real "meat" target, but that ultimately would not work... but the results were great! I dont know how new paint would work, but being so thick, I figure its gotta be a better simulation that a gallon water.

Here is the first shot. Very good expansion.

It looks like Federal Hydro-Shoks would be very effective killing paint cans.:D

It also shows that shooting stuff is fun. I think I have some old quart cans of mostly dried up paint out in the shed...

Bullet recovery??

Were you able to recover any of the bullets?
That might be of interest to some of us.
Looks like it might be fun

No, sir. It was a very informal, non-scientific day. Just shot the box of twenty into the can with the board behind it and then hiked home. I was impressed though. The scale is slightly off between photos, but if you notice the width of the can the exit hole is almost double the area of the entrance.

EDIT/CORRECTION: Shrank the photo; scale is fixed.

You can make a 5 gallon bucket sized blob of "ballistics gel" for about 20 bucks and an hour of time to make, and once you retrieve your pretty little lead mushrooms, you can melt it down and re-use it.

Not sure how serious you are with this. I vote for the ballistics gel suggestion.

I don't like the idea of paint being spilled around our Arizona desert. Also repeatability is the key to a good test medium, and the gel gives you that.

Try a Fackler Box next time:

Simply use water-filled ziplock storage baggies with whatever obstacle you may wish to place in front.
