My new, old, S&W M27-2

Over the weekend, I received a superb condition 27-2: five-inch barrel, P&R'ed, gorgeous blue, red ramp front sight. The trigger is a dream, it is in "excellent plus" condition, and it shoots like a dream (DA and SA trigger pulls are smooooooooth).

Serial number is N1701xx. What can our experts tell me about this fine old Smith?

That you're a damn lucky bugger to get it! Oh, you likely ment some history, sorry jealously clouded my reading comprehension... :)

You will be posting pictures for us to drool over won't you?

Give it TLC, they rode with a great bunch of pistoleros in their
day! Congrats, you will enjoy it the rest of your life!

Anybody know if the 27-2s came from the factory with that red insert sight? I've seen 27-3s like that but not the 27-2s.

My 27-2 has the 8 3/8" barrel so it's not exactly representitive, but both my 29-2's have red insert front sights that look exactly like my M24, so I'm assuming they are factory inserts. If they put them on the 29's I'd think they would on the 27's as well.

Thanks for the replies and here's a picture; it is a great old Smith:

Congrat's RWK;

Great find, and a true honest to goodness relic. If you some
how decide that you don't want to bother giving that 27-2
the proper TLC it deserves; then pack her up and ship it to
your old friend, Ala Dan. I promise I will take good care of
it for year's to come. Enjoy-

Best Wishes,

It's a great revolver. An American classic. With care it will last longer than you. Shoot the hell out of it. It's strong. Keep it clean and well lubed. Learn how to disassemble it and put it back together (Kuhnhausen's book) and USE THE RIGHT TOOLS. The wrong tools will booger and scratch it faster than a single action letoff.

RWK, It's a beauty.

I just had to re-post it out front!!

What is a single action letoff? Also curious how much you paid for it? Have been eyeing an older 27 with 8" barrel. It has recessed cylinder chambers etc... Beautiful gun, but they are asking $439, which seems high.

I paid about $350 for a 8 3/8" M27-2 (pinned barrel, recessed cylinders) and a scope last December. A 5" would go for more around here since they more rare.

Makarov - that moment of zen when the sear breaks free of the hammer and a very loud noise ensues followed by an almost instantaneous hole with a splash of day glow green around it from a Shoot-n-See target 25 feet away.

Range Report

A quick follow-up, for those who are interested: I took the 27-2 to a friend’s farm yesterday and fired a few hundred .38 Special 130 grain FMJ rounds. The trigger (both SA and DA) is clearly the smoothest I have ever fired. Accuracy was fantastic (at least for me), with consistent two-inch groups at 15+ yards . . .
even I can be a marksman with this piece.

Further, the quality, fit, finish, durability, and reliability of this approximately 30 year old “N” frame seems flawless . . . and they remind me that recent S&W “N” frames -- while good -- do not generally rival their heritage.

Congratulations!

My model 27-2 was new in 1978 or 1979, and came with an 8.375-inch barrel and a Patridge front sight. I did the action job myself: a glass-smooth double action pull, and a very crisp single action pull of just over 2.5 pounds. Sad to say, she never was quite the shooter I'd hoped she'd proved, so I kept her in the box for quite a few years.

I tried her again about four years ago, still wasn't impressed with the accuracy, and sent her off for a Clark barrel. She's now a truly accurate shooter--probably the one turn every six inches twist--but sad to say, the barrel's too bulky for my wrist, and like a complete @#$%^&! fool, I accidentally left a thumb print on the original barrel, put it away for a year, and ended up with a rust spot. Maybe one of these days, I'll find a good five-inch barrel.

Does anyone know whether a 27-3 barrel can be used on a 27-2 frame? Were 27-3 barrels checkered on top?

Regards,
Standing Wolf
