My new Model 10

I picked up this really clean Smith & Wesson Model 10-5 today at a local gun show. I traded an AR15 upper for it.

This shows no wear on the bluing or the wood grips. I'm not even sure it was ever fired. It does have a drag line from the cylinder.

The beauty of it is that it came with the original box, paperwork and cleaning tools. The cardboard box is in good condition after 50 years.

I'm uncertain how long I'll keep her. If I can find a collector that wants to pay me for it I'll sell for sure. I'm really looking for a good condition model 10 for shooting. I'd prefer a 4 inch barrel. Personally I've never been a collector, I prefer shooting my firearms and I don't want to worry about maybe scratching or putting a nick in it.

That's looks to be in very nice condition. I would buy that in a second if I had the funds. Good luck with the sale. :)

Wojtekkembier, great question that I am hoping to find out. I saw a 10-5! w/ 5" barrel, sell for over $1000 on Gunbroker in December 2014. I don't think I could expect that kind of price but I would hope for maybe $750.

People on this site are a bit more savvy and/or aware about market trends. Also many on here look for really good deals only and will brag on low price they paid. So around here you will see people say $400 is just OK but you could do better. I'm not so sure that is an easy or every day find, nor like a once Ina lifetime fnd and that price.

Smith & Wesson manufactured around 6-7 million of this model in various barrel lengths. Many were used in military and police units and there condition shows that kind of wear. To find one in this excellent to outstanding condition with all the paperwork and packaging is the kicker for this model.

Well, first of all, each screw is perfect! No one has messed with them.

I would guess it might never have been fired, talk to collectors, I have no idea what you could get for it, but looks pristine!

When you sell it, look for a 4" put Packmyer Grips on it, have a gun smith take the bottom of the cylinder release off, to facilitate quick reloads with speed loaders! Rounding the trigger on your 4" makes for nicer double action shooting.

Yes, that was something I looked for an noticed, including the grip screw. It doesn't appear that anyone has taken a tool to it.

The OP's Model 10 is one beautiful wheelgun.
For such a high volume produced pistol, they sure are nice quality.

I bought a new Model 10 with 6" barrel about 40 years ago. Sold it to my brother a couple years later to fund a Model 13. Gave the 13 to my oldest son 20 years ago.
Both pistols are still LNIB - brother has never shot his.

Also gave a Model 34 .22lr Kit Gun to my grandson, and a Model 36 to another son. Those are like new in box too. I only have 3 Smiths left - a Model 29-2, a Model 63, and a Model 38-3 Bodyguard Airweight.

Howdy

Very nice. If I ran across a Model 10-5 in such nice condition here in New England I would not blink twice about paying $750 for it. I would grab it and run. As far as I am concerned, the 6" barrel is a plus. Guys may brag about paying $400 for a used K frame, but that does not happen in this neck of the woods, at least not one in such nice condition.

By the way, not all collectors lock their guns away in the gun safe without shooting them. I am a collector and I shoot all my guns. I just try to be careful with the really nice ones so I don't scratch them up.

Very nice . . she's a beauty! Nothing like a good M & P or Model 10. That one is going to give you a lot of enjoyment! Great photos and congrats on your find! :)

I hate to try to give value estimates because there are so many variables that it almost comes down to the time of day. A year ago I would have laughed out loud at someone saying a Model 10-5 would sell for $1,000. But I have seen some pretty crazy prices.

But bear in mind the big money comes from serious collectors. The guns that command the big amounts are PRISTINE in original boxes with correct accessories and documentation. As condition drops so does the price and it drops quickly.

You also have to consider scarcity. The 10-5 is not a rare model. They made hundreds of thousands of them.

I have only seen photos of your gun so I can't say for sure but the stocks look to me like they show signs of handling and use. The metal looks really clean but it may have seen some use and I would not put it in the PRISTINE category. It's very nice...but not the PRISTINE condition the serious collectors shell out big bucks to buy.

Also, with most S&W revolvers the general rule is that the longer the barrel the lower the money it will bring. The snubs are sexy and everybody wants them. You mentioned seeing some high dollar 5" M10s selling. Well, the 5" is rather uncommon. Not made in anywhere near the same numbers as the 4" and 6" like yours.

I'm not trying to be a wet blanket and if you sell I hope you get all you can for it. I just want you to not get your hopes too high.
