My new M65

(I've posted this on another forum as well but I'm spreading the Love!)

Thanks in part to DHart, whose photography helped convince me that I HAD to have a 3" model 13 or 65, I got one today. Traded in two old .22's and a little cash on a model 65 with roundish-looking black pachmayrs. (Actual price in the case was $299.) Funny-I actually was deciding between this one and a 2-1/2" model 66. I really liked that snubby. I came home, dropped the 65 off and had to go out for a while. The whole time I was out I'm thinking I should have gone the other way. But when I got home and brought it out again, I knew I made the right choice.

Can someone help me out with mfr dates, etc.
On the frame, inside the crane is "MOD. 65-3"
On the inside of the crane, (on the crane itself) is a number: "373xx" with a star above the last number. On the base of the grip frame is "AWE27xx" What is the reason for these two different numbers?

It is used, in what I consider very good condition, operationally sound, all function is good and it's tight where it needs to be and there's play where there should be-obviously I'll know better when I fire it but I don't expect any surprises. I bought it from a reputable dealer who will refund in full or take it back in trade for 30 days. My only concern is that-and I'm kicking myself for not noticing earlier-that all three screws, the one in the cylinder release and the two on the side plate, are ever so slightly "buggered". If it's an older unit, it may just be that the previous owner (or one of the many previous owners?) took the plate off with a too small screwdriver, to check it out, spray out some gunk or whatever. If the function proves as good as I expect it to be I won't worrry about it. They are not messed up bad enough to "need" replacing. I didn't even notice it until I started polishing it. I may replace them anyway for vanity's sake.

Anyway, I love the feel and fit of it and I can't wait to shoot it! Again, any basic info is appreciated.

Thanks,
Jim

Nice!

I'm quite jealous of ya.

I've been trying to track down a 3" 13 or 65 for a little while with no luck.
they seem to be keepers!

It looks like 1986. I have 2 of them, one for carry, one for ??? :) I will buy more but they're hard to find in 3".

I looked for years to find a three inch. I finally broke down and bought a nice 4 inch Model 65.
I sent it on a trip to S&W, and when I got it back, it was sporting a new heavy three inch barrel, DAO lockwork, bobbed hammer, trigger stop, and a trigger job. This is one sweet shooting carry revolver now. The Hogue LamoCamo grips are nice too.

Jim.. glad I was able to take some responsibility for helping to make something good happen in the world! ;-)= Great gun my friend.

Don't worry about the screw heads... if the gun runs well and is safe, all you need to do is replace the screws... they're cheap. Just make sure you use the proper screwdriver in future and don't slip up! Before long you'll be doing your own action jobs... they're easy to do with good instruction.

Now, I have some grips for you to check out... these are Ahrends round butt exotic finger groove grips and I'm WILD about them! Shown here on my 3" 686, I use them on numerous Smiths and they fit like a glove and feel amazing. K- and L-frame guns take the same grips... just know whether your frame is round- or square-butt. Ahrends also makes a round to square butt conversion grip... they look exactly like the grips on my 586 below.

And for those with K or L-frame square butt grip frames.... you might consider these Ahrends... they've transformed my 586 BIG TIME...

Hey Z (or D?)
I'm actually partial to the more compact look of the Spegel boots in your other photos. The pachmayr's that it came with are kinda ugly but feel great. I'll leave them on for a while. When I have the SS looking as nice as possible I may have to dress it up with some new "furniture". Also, please stop posting your pix or I will be forced to find a blue cousin for it. (I can't afford to keep reading your posts!)

Dinosaur,
How far up are you? The shop I got it at is just outside Philly and had two on hand at the same price. Actually a very good selection of used revolvers: 2 M66 snubs, 2 M65 -3"ers; a nice 4" M19, about a half dozen 4" M66's and a 4" GP100 with about the lightest, smoothest DA trigger I have ever pulled. All of the above $299 or less.

GO EAGLES!!
