My New Lee-Enfield

Well I will admit I do not know my Lee-Enfields as well as my Mauser, Soviet block and US WW2 guns.
I should know more considering how many I own and how much I love to shoot them.
I just went through and did a quick clean and checked head space for test firing this weekend.
Once I have test fired I will strip it down completely, clean and document the markings and put it in the safe with its other Enfield brothers.
Here is my problem though.
I can't seem to find much info on this rifle.
All my others Enfields are well marked and easily I.D.

So here are some pic's to help in identifying this rifle.

I believe it to be a 1944 No.4 1/2 BSA Shirley that was FTR'd in 1956. During FTR the trigger was moved to the receiver. Can you take pictures of the complete rifle?

TK

Well it is a 1956 Factory through repair.

I looked at some Maltby pictures as a "1" before a WW2 date meant maltby, but I don't know about yours. The 1944 stamping is very crude and not something I would expect in a production stamping.

What's with all the scratches on the receiver? Looks like someone's taken an angle grinder to that rifle?

I had one imported by century like that... everything except the manufacture date had been ground off and electro stenciled over.

MK 1/2? that's a new one for me.
No4 Mk1 upgraded to No4 Mk2 spec during the FTR. If it had started out as a No4 Mk1* & been upgraded it would be a no4 Mk1/3.

Maybe your files are too big? Those images are HUGE! (2255X1267 pixels)

Well the forum says I have uploaded the max number of files soooo...
Anyway you gave me enough info to figure out the rest.
I have no idea who or what happened to the receiver.
Looks like a brillo pad was used to clean off the consmo.

You folks are great and I always get the info I need - THANKS!

Can you confirm what I have read and been told by a few.
The Enield barrel / receiver was parkerized and then painted black.
Is this correct?
I know I have some that look painted and others that do not.

Yes the finish was paint over park for British-made rifles. The Savage made ones were park no paint. The paint was called Suncorite & it was a baked on type that was discontinued because it (magically) became toxic.

OK, that's what I had read.

Got me thinking of stripping this one down and dura-coating it.
The receiver - well just about every metal part is bare.
Re-do the stock with BLO and a nice dura-coat job for a new looking range rifle.
I know, I know the Enfield Gods will frown upon me.
Just a thought.
